UiTM seminar clearly an abuse of trust and stewardship — CFM

MAY 8 — Christian Federation of Malaysia (CFM) supports academic freedom, and the right of a public university such as the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) to organise a public lecture on any topic, but academic freedom and public university facilities should not be used to present and promote skewed statements with no opportunity for rebuttal of facts. That is a clear abuse of trust and stewardship.

If there is to be sincere and genuine academic freedom, then let us have an intellectual exchange with integrity instead of a one-sided presentation with arguably inaccurate information being disseminated as fact.

Otherwise, the May 6 seminar at UiTM would be nothing more than hate speech and sectarian religious propaganda thinly disguised as academic freedom, which causes a great diminution of scholastic integrity, greater disservice to intellectual honesty, and greatest discredit to the reputation of the public institution.

The team will concentrate on planning, coordination and advice to local authorities rather than operations on the ground to look for the girls, who were seized by the Islamist militant group Boko Haram on April 14.

The team will fly to Nigeria "as soon as possible", said Prime Minister David Cameron's spokesman.

Britain is also expected to send Abuja-based liaison officers from the SAS special forces to help the rescue mission, the Times reported today.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan accepted the offer when the two leaders spoke by telephone earlier yesterday.

The experts will be drawn from government departments including the defence, international development and foreign affairs ministries and may include military officers.

US President Barack Obama has sent military experts to Nigeria to help in the search and the British team will complement their efforts.

Cameron's spokesman could not say how large the team would be.

In his phone call with Jonathan, Cameron expressed his "shock at the appalling attack and wholehearted support for the Nigerian people", a spokeswoman added.

"Both leaders also agreed that their respective governments should explore how to further strengthen co-operation on counter-terrorism in the longer term to prevent such attacks in the future," she said.

"The prime minister and president agreed on the importance of the international community working together to meet the challenge posed by Islamic extremism and violence."

Speaking in parliament earlier, Cameron condemned the kidnapping as "an act of pure evil".

"It has united people across the planet to stand with Nigeria to help find these children and return them to their parents," he told lawmakers.

Cameron said Britain had made "repeated offers of help" since the kidnap.

"This is not just a Nigerian issue; it is a global issue," he added.

"There are extreme Islamists around our world who are against education, against progress, against equality and we must fight them and take them on wherever they are." ― AFP

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun told a news conference here that the government had studied the matter before arriving at the decision.

"Based on the trend, we want to drop the 'race' column, but not now. It will slowly take place over the years.

"For the moment, we are only dropping the column with no value added," he said and cited the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) and the housing loan scheme forms for the low-income group.

To date, more than 120 official government forms have dropped the 'race column.

Entulu said there were three categories of official forms which still retained the 'race' column, with one of these related to Article 153 of the Federal Constitution to protect the position and rights of communities in the country.

In the second category, the racial identity is required to meet the legal requirements involving land, education, business and those areas gazetted under the acts.

In the third category, the racial identity is needed for research and planning purposes such as in disease control, education enhancement, population demography, and facility and development planning. —Bernama

Asian stocks rise, rebounding from biggest slide in seven weeks

Posted: 07 May 2014 05:33 PM PDT

SYDNEY, May 8 ― Asian stocks rose, with the regional benchmark gauge on course to recover some of yesterday's largest decline in seven weeks, as Chair Janet Yellen said the Federal Reserve will continue to support the US economy.

The MSCI Asia Pacific Index gained 0.2 per cent to 137.10 as of 9:01 am in Tokyo, before markets open in Hong Kong and China. Yellen told US lawmakers the economic stimulus that has fueled global asset gains is still required because employment and inflation are well short of the central bank's goals. China will today post declines in exports and imports for April, according to economists.

"The long-term view is still positive on equities, with earnings growing and positive economic growth that is gaining momentum," said Mark Lister, Wellington-based head of private wealth research at Craigs Investment Partners Ltd., which has about US$7.4 billion (RM24.1 billion) under management.

Japan's Topix index climbed 0.5 per cent. New Zealand's NZX 50 Index slid 0.2 per cent and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 Index rose 0.2 per cent. South Korea's Kospi index advanced 0.4 per cent.

Futures on Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index gained 0.1 per cent and contracts on the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index of mainland shares traded in the city added 0.5 per cent in most recent trading. The Bloomberg China-US Equity Index of the most- traded Chinese stocks in New York fell one per cent yesterday, led by Internet companies.

China may report today that exports fell three per cent in April from a year earlier, a third straight month of declines, according to the median of 47 economists' estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Imports are expected to have dropped 2.1 per cent, following an 11.3 per cent retreat in March that was the biggest drop since February 2013. A private gauge of Chinese services industries in April fell yesterday, adding to signs that a slowdown in Asia's largest economy is gathering pace.

Futures on the Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 0.1 per cent today. The US equities benchmark gained 0.6 per cent yesterday as optimism that the Fed will continue to support the world's biggest economy overshadowed a drop in Internet stocks led by Yahoo! Inc and Groupon Inc. ― Bloomberg

City to go for the jugular in West Ham title decider

City netted their 100th goal of the season in a 4-0 win over Aston Villa which sent them two points clear of Liverpool at the top of the table and put them within touching distance of a second title in three years.

With a vastly superior goal difference over their rivals, City need only a point from Sunday's clash at the Etihad Stadium, but they will not be playing it safe.

"Now we can talk about the title," Pellegrini told the BBC. "Before this game I was just thinking about winning against Aston Villa.

"Now of course we must win the last game here at home against West Ham. We are not thinking of drawing. We are thinking of trying to play. As we did so far during the whole season here at the Etihad.

"If we play in that way maybe we can win the title."

The emphatic victory over Aston Villa was far from the comfortable stroll in the park the score-line suggests, with the visitors' stubborn rear guard holding out until the 64th minute to send tension levels soaring inside the Etihad.

In contrast to Liverpool, whose gung-ho approach has cost them precious points in their final two outings, City patiently waited for their moment, maintaining their high-tempo passing game throughout.

The breakthrough came courtesy of striker Edin Dzeko, whose two goals in eight minutes gave City breathing space, before Stevan Jovetic added a third and Yaya Toure rounded off the scoring with a superb individual goal in stoppage-time.

"The way we play, I am very happy to win the title that way," said Pellegrini.

"There are different ways to win the title, I choose this one - this one is attractive football and our fans enjoy the season. You can win titles in another way but for me the aesthetic part of the game is very important."

City have emerged out of the slipstream of their rivals, avoiding the pressure that inevitably comes from leading the field.

They spent the early part of the campaign trailing Arsenal, before Chelsea took up the baton and passed it to Liverpool, while City hovered on their shoulders, behind on points but with games in hand.

When Liverpool folded under the strain, losing at home to Chelsea and giving away a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Crystal Palace on Monday, City took their chance and moved to the front.

"It's been a strange season because we were never at the top of the table," Pellegrini said.

"Everybody was talking about us being the favourites but we were nine points behind Liverpool and eight behind Chelsea - we had three games in hand but we had to win all of those games." — Reuters

The 33-year-old took to her Twitter account yesterday to clear up some of the speculation surrounding her nuptials that will take place later this month. The first thing she clarified is the status of their relationship.

"Seeing so many different reports not gonna start disputing them all but a few I want to straighten out..." she wrote to her 21.1 million followers. "1. We are not married yet!"

The next rumour she cleared up will shock many of her loyal fans who have watched her reality show since it began in 2007. Unlike her doomed 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries, this walk down the aisle will not be televised.

"2. We are not filming our wedding for Keeping Up With The Kardashians. You will see everything leading up til & maybe even photos," she added. "As much as we would love to share these memories, privacy is our main priority."

The star then moved on to wedding details, including her guest list and what she would be wearing. While some outlets have reported the ceremony and reception will be an over the top, extravagant affair, Kim revealed it will be anything but extravagant.

"3. No guest list has been released. Seeing fake ones. Especially not 1600 people invited like I just read. Its VERY small & intimate," she wrote. "4. Seeing fake wedding dress pics of me. No one has seen my dress! Those photos are old or photo shopped."

The mother-of-one signed off by reminding fans to ignore stories that don't come direct from her, Kanye or her family regarding her May 24 nuptials.

"That's its! Unless you hear it from us please don't believe nonsense!" she said. ― Cover Media
