The association is inviting those interested to submit logo designs for IAK, and the designer of the chosen logo will be awarded with cash prize of RM500.

Mystical Mirage selected to compete in Hard Rock Rising 2014

Posted: 12 Feb 2014 08:09 AM PST

KUCHING: Local rock band, Mystical Mirage is scaling yet another height in their career, just after their recent haul of two awards in the coveted 5th Voice International Music Awards (Vima) Malaysia.

This time the band has been chosen to take part in an international competition known as Hard Rock Rising 2014, touted as "THE Global Battle of the Bands", which is taking place online in 82 participating Hard Rock Café locations around worldwide.

The winner will get to perform in front of 40,000 music fans at "Hard Rock Live Music Festival" in Rome, Italy.

Band vocalist and front man, Kenneth Ho Hong Hui, shared the band's exciting moment with The Borneo Post in an exclusive interview, saying that this is yet another milestone they hope to achieve.

"It all started when I received an email from an online musician platform Reverbnation, asking us to submit our profile for the competition. I asked our manager to send it and after a week, we received an email saying we have been selected.

"We were speechless and excited because we will be competing with talented bands around the world and only a few bands will be selected. This is a chance of a lifetime. We will just try our best and hope to move further," he said.

"Since I'm from Kuching I hope our achievement will encourage more Kuching people to take up music and never give up on their dreams," he enthused.

According to Ho, the band has started to create awareness through Facebook and other offline means after the fan online voting process began.

Voting closes on February 17. "To vote for us just download our song 'Heroes' from the site (http://reverbnation.com/contests/2728/artist/3526752).

"After that 25 bands with the most votes will be reviewed by an industry panel of judges selected by Hard Rock International and the select five semi-finalists to compete globally," he explained.

"The song 'Heroes' is the most unique Mandarin song ever done by us. It blends Chinese traditional musical instruments with modern rock. It is a song about musicians' struggle, courage and persistence to get their songs heard.

"When I first composed this song, it was not like this. It was less ethnic. However, the composition was lost when my computer was stolen during a house break-in.

"Luckily I had a copy of it at home in Kuching and when I took it back to Kuala Lumpur, I met up with Ryan Tan (of local rock band Daydream).

"He suggested that we do a collaboration so I recomposed the song and it became what it is today," he said, hoping to get support and vote for the song so that the band will have the chance to advance in the competition.

Mystical Mirage is a five-piece band consisting of Ho, Jimmy Pui, Jared Ng, Authur Cham and Aaron AC. It originated from Kuching and is now based in Kuala Lumpur. The band launched their first EP titled "Prelude" in Kuching last October and to-date

over 300 copies have been sold nationwide.

Adenan, the Chosen One

Posted: 12 Feb 2014 12:36 AM PST

TAN SRI DATUK AMAR ADENAN HAJI SATEM will take over the reins as Chief Minister of Sarawak.

No state in Malaysia has been in the limelight over the choice of its Chief Minister as much as Sarawak has over the last few years. Much speculation, rumours, wagers and coffeeshop chatter have placed favourites as Adenan, Datuk Amar Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan and Datuk Sri Effendi Norwawi.

And it ended today with the announcement by Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Adenan, 70, who was born in Kuching in 1944, once worked as a journalist and teacher before continuing his studies in law at the University of Adelaide, Australia.

His early education was at SRB St Joseph and SMB St Joseph, Kuching.

After graduating in 1970, he was appointed as a magistrate in Kuching.

His involvement in politics started in 1976 when he was appointed as legal advisor and a committee member of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Sarawak.

In 1979, he contested and won twice, once in the by-election for the Muara Tuang constituency in January and again in the state election several months later for the same constituency.

He continued to defend the seat, winning every state election held subsequently.

He became an Assistant Minister in 1985.

In the 2004 general election, he also contested the Sadong parliamentary seat and beat the PAS candidate. Consequently, he was appointed to the federal cabinet as Minister of Natural Resources and Environment. He gave up the post to return to Sarawak.

Adenan was moved from the Muara Tuang constituency to Tanjung Datu in the 2006 state election which he won.

The Tanjung Datu assemblyman was appointed Special Advisor in the Chief Minister's Office on April 2, 2010.

He was later appointed Minister with Special Functions on June 6, 2011.

Among Adenan's other credentials were: chairman of Sarawak Foundation (since 1998), chairman of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus Council (since 2004), chairman of the Sarawak Malay Culture Foundation (YBMS), Board of Directors for Sarawak Higher Education Foundation (SHEF) and Board Member of Curtin University of Technology Sarawak Campus Miri.

As a member of the State Legislative Assembly since 1978, he held the post of Federal Minister for Natural Resources & Environment from March 31, 2004 till Feb 14, 2006), state Minister for Agriculture & Food Industries (January 1998 — March 2004), Minister for Social Development (September 1992 – January 1998), Minister for Land Development (March 1987 – September 1992) and Assistant Minister for Land Development (July 1985 – March 1987).

Adenan also oversee matters relating to Rela, Malaysian Anti- Crime Foundation (Sarawak Chapter), Suhakam, Education Department, Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka, Information & Broadcasting.

Married to Datin Sri Jamillah Anu, Adenan has five children. His hobbies are fishing, hunting, golfing, reading, writing and amateur historian.
