Rodgers favours deeper role for Gerrard

Rodgers was speaking after his team moved up to fourth in the Premier League, five points behind leaders Manchester City, on the strength of a pulsating 5-3 win at Stoke's Britannia Stadium yesterday.

Gerrard, 33, has returned to the Liverpool side after a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring problem and has occupied a position in front of the Reds defence.

It is a role he has played regularly for England and occasionally performed for Liverpool in the past.

But Rodgers believes that sitting deep will help get the best out of Gerrard as he enters his final seasons.

The England captain made his first start after his injury in the 2-0 FA Cup win over Oldham and has been discussing the new position with Rodgers in recent weeks.

Rodgers, who has previously suggested that Gerrard could end up playing centre-back, said: "I just feel that he's someone that fits the profile of that role.

"He does it a bit more with England and in the period out we had real success playing with a controlling player and two guys pressing and playing in a central corridor.

"That position is perfect for him. He has the personality to play it.

When you play in that controlling role you need to get on the ball and he gives us great variety in his passing.

"At this stage of his career, I've spoken a lot to him about it and it was just about the timing of when to play him in the role and he played it really well. It's something that I'll look at."

Liverpool pulled into a two-goal lead with a Ryan Shawcross own-goal and a Luis Suarez effort before Stoke's Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam put the hosts level at half-time.

Gerrard converted a penalty just after the break before Suarez added a fourth from a pass from Daniel Sturridge, who made his first appearance since suffering an ankle injury in November.

Jonathan Walters pulled another goal back for the home side but Suarez laid on a fifth for Sturridge to seal the win.

Rodgers is playing down his team's title prospects but believes they have shown they can go the distance this season.

He added: "We entered into the game at Stoke with 18 games to go, nine at home and nine away and seven of the away games are against teams in the bottom half.

"They're not gimmees and it's a tough league but we've shown enough over the course of the season that we'll be challenging. That's all we've ever wanted to be.

"We've never stated that we're going to win the league. To jump from where we've been we just needed to be in the conversation.

"We've shown we can score goals. We have done at Anfield and have done away from home and we're getting better and improving all the time."

Stoke manager Mark Hughes believes his team can take plenty from their performance despite slipping to what appears to be a comprehensive defeat.

The Potters' next two league matches are against struggling Crystal Palace and Sunderland as they look to stay clear of the relegation zone.

Hughes said: "We showed real desire and determination.

"That augers well because we've got big games coming up but once again we've gone up against one of the better sides in the Premier League and made a real game of it but too many things went against us.

"This was one of our better performances here but 5-3 doesn't indicate that."— AFP

The celebrity fashion parade got underway a couple of hours before the show itself ― although only after workers mopped up water from what organizers called a "malfunction with a sprinkler" that flooded the red carpet.

Best actress nominee Amy Adams was among the early arrivals at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, which sought to make light of the near flooding disaster.

"As some of the biggest names in entertainment are scheduled to attend the Golden Globe Awards tonight, we wanted to give the carpet one last wash before it opened," the hotel said in a statement.

Harrowing saga "12 Years a Slave" and crime caper "American Hustle" are likely frontrunners at the 71st annual show, preceded by numerous star-studded parties.

The race for glory features the strongest field in years, with other contenders including 3D space drama "Gravity,"Somali piracy tale "Captain Phillips," and Scorsese's scandal epic "The Wolf of Wall Street. "

On the small screen― increasingly important as big-screen stars and money migrate to television ― Netflix's pioneering "House of Cards" could win more gold, as could cult hit "Breaking Bad," after its finale in September.

Comedy stars Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will host the Globes for a second year, while a string of nominees including Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Leonardo DiCaprio and "Hunger Games" star Jennifer Lawrence will be among those handing out prizes.

Going into Sunday night's show, "12 Years a Slave" and "American Hustle" have the most nominations with seven nods each, followed by five for black and white road movie "Nebraska."

Both frontrunners garnered nods for their main actors, including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lupita Nyong'o and Michael Fassbender for "12 Years a Slave,"and Adams, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Lawrence for "American Hustle."

"Captain Phillips" starring Hanks in the true story of a US cargo ship attacked by Somali hijackers, and "Gravity," with Bullock as an astronaut stranded in space with George Clooney, won four nods apiece.

In the drama race, "12 Years a Slave," based on a real story of a free black man abducted and sold into slavery in the 1840s, is up against "Captain Phillips," "Gravity," "Philomena" and "Rush."

Nominated for best drama actor are Ejiofor, Hanks, Idris Elba for "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom," Matthew McConaughey for "Dallas Buyers Club" and Robert Redford for "All Is Lost."

A trio of British actresses are vying for the drama award ― Emma Thompson in "Saving Mr Banks," Judi Dench for "Philomena" and Kate Winslet for "Labour Day" ― along with Cate Blanchett for "Blue Jasmine" and Bullock.

The Globes have separate categories for drama and musical/comedy films.

For best musical or comedy the shortlist is "American Hustle," "Her," "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Nebraska" and "The Wolf of Wall Street" starring DiCaprio.

Best musical or comedy actor nominees include DiCaprio, Joaquin Phoenix for "Her" and Meryl Streep for "August: Osage County," as well as the "American Hustle" cast members.

Best director nominees are Alfonso Cuaron for "Gravity," David O. Russell for "American Hustle," Alexander Payne for "Nebraska,"Paul Greengrass for "Captain Phillips" and Steve McQueen for "12 Years a Slave."

On the television side, fans of "Breaking Bad" will be hoping it can beat rival nominees "Downton Abbey," "The Good Wife," "House of Cards" and "Masters of Sex."

The Globes are run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), and voted on by barely 80 journalists ― in contrast to the Oscars, chosen by 6,000 members of the prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Nominations for the Oscars will be announced on Thursday. The Academy Awards will be held on March 2. ― AFP

Will Australia embrace the cat café trend? (VIDEO)

A 'Cat Café Melbourne' campaign has been launched on crowdfunding website indiegogo.com, to raise AUS$97,000 (about RM284,417) for the first cat café Down Under.

The project is the brainchild of local couple Anita and Myles Loughran, and the pair are hoping to showcase around eight cats from a local shelter at the café, to raise awareness of shelter animals.

"We all crave animal contact and companionship on some level," explains Anita in the couple's campaign video. "Our goal will be to provide a loving home for our rescue cats."

However, this will be one cat café with a difference, as Australia's health and safety laws prohibit the presence of cats in the actual café area. Customers will be able to observe the cats through a glass wall, but will need to go to a separate area to play with the animals.

Cat cafés arrived in Europe in 2012 with the opening of Café Neko in Vienna, and similar ventures have since sprung up in Paris and London.

The news of the Melbourne Cat Café comes as Japan's animal lovers move away from cats and turn their attention towards owls and rabbits, according to trendspotters at gaming website Kotaku.

Teenaged terror hits four to upstage Milan’s Honda

Posted: 12 Jan 2014 04:54 PM PST

AC Milan's Keisuke Honda gestures during their Italian Serie A soccer match against Sassuolo at the Mapei stadium in Reggio Emilia January 12, 2014. — ReutersAC Milan's Keisuke Honda gestures during their Italian Serie A soccer match against Sassuolo at the Mapei stadium in Reggio Emilia January 12, 2014. — ReutersMILAN, Jan 13 — Teenaged striker Domenico Berardi scored four goals for Sassuolo in a 4-3 win over AC Milan to steal the limelight from new Rossoneri midfielder Keisuke Honda.

Japan international Honda, signed on a free transfer from CSKA Moscow, came off the bench for Massimiliano Allegri's side 20 minutes into the second half.

By that time, the damage had been done although Honda came close to helping reduce arrears for the struggling Serie A giants when a header came off the post late in the second half.

Robinho gave Milan a ninth-minute lead when he ran on to Nigel De Jong's ball after the Dutch midfielder and Bryan Cristante had dispossessed Raman Chibsah to beat Gianluca Pegolo with a low angled strike at the keeper's far post.

The visitors were 2-0 up only four minutes later when Mario Balotelli beat Pegolo with an angled strike to send Milan on their way to what appeared to be an easy three points.

Sassuolo, however, had other ideas.

Eusebio Di Francesco's side had succumbed to a 7-0 reverse at home to Inter Milan early in the season but showed great resolve to reduce their two-goal deficit within 13 minutes.

There was a hint of offside about Berardi's opener when he ran in behind the defence on the quarter hour to beat Christian Abbiati from a tight angle.

However Berardi's second was a fine demonstration of individual skills and sheer determination.

The striker collected in midfield, shook off one challenge, and then dismissed another in the area to turn and beat Abbiati with a sharp, angled strike.

Berardi completed his hat-trick on 41 minutes, nicking in ahead of Urby Emanuelson to leave Abbiati with no chance by first-timing Reto Ziegler's pacy cross from the left past the 'keeper.

The Sassuolo striker stunned Milan with his fourth of the game and 11th of the season two minutes after the restart when he bundled home from close range.

Allegri saw the warning signs and made a double substitution, Honda replacing Robinho and Riccardo Montolivo replacing Antonio Nocernino.

Honda found himself in a scoring position moments later but was spurned and then saw a header from a cross on the left blocked by Pegolo.

Seven minutes from time, Honda struck the post with a first-time curling effort from the edge of the area and although the rebound fell to Giampaolo Pazzini, Pegolo did well to block the striker from close range.

Milan were given a glimmer of hope five minutes from the finish when Montolivo collected De Jong's ball in midfield and struck a long-distance drive which beat Pegolo low at his far post

The visitors should have levelled three minutes from time but after Balotelli's header at the back post was punched out by Pegolo, Kaka followed up by sending the rebound against the crossbar. — AFP
