World number one, Nicol, who is vying for her third consecutive US Open title saw off a strong challenge from her compatriot, Low Wee Wern with a 11-6, 11-4 and 11-9 win in the quarter-finals match held at ASB Glass Court, late Wednesday.

For the record, Nicol won the US Open title in 2012 and 2013.

"It's a different tournament and for me, it's another big tournament, so I'm excited to be here. It was tough out there today, playing Wee Wern but I'm happy to win in three," she said as quoted in the tournament's website: www.usopensquash.com.

"It's difficult playing against your teammate, but you have to just think that it's the quarterfinals and whoever is there, is a contender, and they're out to get you. I had to be alert and sharp today, and I'm really pleased with my performance," added the 31-year old Penangite.

Nicol will square off against her nemesis, Egyptian, Raneem El-Weleily in the semi-finals match late tomorrow.

Raneem, the world number three avenged her defeat against Alison Waters of England by registering a 11-9, 11-8 and 11-5 victory.

The 25-year-old Egyptian lost to the world number five player at the quarter-finals of the Carol Weymuller Open held in New York last week.

"I'm very thankful, and happy to win that match. I don't think Alison was as fresh as she was last week. She wasn't getting to a lot of shots that she was running down in New York," said Raneem.

"The rest days we get in this tournament are great," she added. "It gives you time to relax, chill out, and then prepare for the next round. I know I'll be playing a Malaysian next — I hope they kill each other in a really long, tough match!" ― Bernama

Five food factories in Penang ordered to close due to hygenic conditions

Posted: 16 Oct 2014 05:52 PM PDT

GEORGE TOWN, Oct 16 ― Five food factories in Penang, including a 100-year-old soya bean factory at Tanjong Bungah here, were ordered closed by the state health department yesterday for failure to observe hygienic conditions.

State health (food safety and quality division) deputy director Ku Nafishah Ku Ariffin said soya bean products were made in a rusty and moldy kitchen which appeared to have not been cleaned up for a long time.

"Our inspection also found the wet products were left to dry on bamboo sticks with bathing towels. The bamboo sticks were also dirty and dusty," she told reporters here today.

The other premises closed included a candy factory in Teluk Kumbar, noodle factory in Simpang Ampat and a sauce factory in Bukit Metajam. ― Bernama

Euro stocks close mixed as traders fear return to crisis

London's benchmark FTSE 100 index ended down 0.25 per cent at 6,195.91 points, while in Paris, the CAC 40 lost 0.54 per cent to 3,918.62 points.

Meanwhile Frankfurt's DAX index added 0.13 per cent compared with Wednesday's closing level to 8,582.90 points.

"A combination of factors ensured the perfect storm that has been brewing since the start of the week continued to rage on in full force," said Kash Kamal, an analyst at Sucden Financial.

"Worries regarding the political stability in Greece and its already fragile bailout plan combined with the slowing growth outlook across the eurozone after weaker than expected macro data... have seen a protracted sell-off across the majority of risk assets."

Investors were gripped by panic after weak eurozone inflation data, poor demand at a Spanish bond auction and fears that Greece could be set for a fresh financial crisis when it exits its bailout plan sent fresh tremors through already jittery financial markets.

Indexes around Europe dropped more than three per cent after the EU and ECB scrambled to promise Greece that its banks would still have Brussels's support when it leaves its debt-rescue programme.

Adding to the fears were worries that the Ebola outbreak in west Africa could start to spin out of control.

Greece's Finance Minister Guikas Hardouvelis said yesterday that the market turmoil "does not reflect the position or prospects of the Greek economy".

The selloff continued on Wall Street, with US shares continuing the sharp spiral lower sparked by weak retail sales data the day before.

In mid-afternoon trading the Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at 16,072.03, down 0.43 per cent from Wednesday's close.

The broad-based S&P 500 sank 0.47 per cent to 1,853.72 points, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index fell 0.61 per cent to 4,189.78 points.

Eurozone outlook darkens

Eurozone exports fell for the third month running in August, dropping 0.9 per cent in the latest sign of economic weakness, official data showed.

Inflation in the eurozone had dipped to 0.3 per cent in September, the lowest level since financial debt crisis in 2009, separate figures confirmed.

The data adds to concern that the eurozone could slip into a dangerous spiral of deflation, which stifles economic growth and could hurt many of the bloc's already cash-strapped governments.

Weak eurozone economies such as Portugal and Greece saw their bonds fall as investors feared they could once again sink into financial crisis, while even fast-growing Spain saw demand for its debt drop.

"It looks increasingly likely that Germany, the bloc's powerhouse economy, will slip back into recession, and the risk of deflation looms ever larger," said economist Ben Brettell at brokerage Hargreaves Lansdown.

All this comes in a climate of new tension over eurozone national budgets, notably in debt-laden France and Italy.

Pushing his case for a shift away from austerity in EU economic policy, French President Francois Hollande put the slump in global markets down to stagnating growth in the eurozone.

"The United States is slowing down, Europe has not found a way back to growth, which is what I am fighting about," he said.

Oil prices tumble

The selloff also hit oil prices, which slumped due to concerns over the health of the world economy and news of higher-than-expected stockpiles in the world's top consumer, the United States.

"With investors continuing to find shelter under the safe-haven of the dollar, commodity prices slid further, which is not good news for the bottom lines of companies like Royal Dutch Shell and BP," said Tony Cross at Trustnet Direct.

Crude briefly fell below US$80 (RM262.65) a barrel in New York, while in Europe, Brent hit a fresh four-year low of US$82.66.

Sentiment was also rocked this week by investor concerns over the Ebola epidemic in west Africa.

"The big worry is that Ebola is going to bring in a level of uncertainty that's never been seen before in the markets, and the markets don't know how to price uncertainty," said Joe Rundle, head of trading at ETX Capital.

The fierce selloff continued in Asia yesterday, led by Tokyo, with investors worried that economic slowdown in China, Europe and Japan is now hitting the United States.

In London, shares in Shire Pharmaceuticals plunged by another 7.3 per cent after US drugs giant AbbVie announced that its board would no longer recommend a US$54-billion takeover.

The European single currency nudged lower to US$1.2803, from US$1.2834 late in New York on Wednesday. The ruble fell to another record low against the euro.

Bond yields for eurozone periphery countries shot up in the secondary markets, with Portugal rising to 3.585 per cent from 3.286 per cent, while Italy climbed to 2.665 per cent from 2.422 per cent.

Yields on 10-year bonds from Greece jumped to 8.656 per cent from 7.854 per cent. — AFP

The feature, available thanks to a neutral Apple SIM card installed in the device, will allow customers to sign up for short-term service plans and switch carriers using their iPad, the company said.

The SIM card supports AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint high speed networks. For service from the largest US carrier, Verizon Wireless, customers need to install a separate Verizon SIM card.

The feature allows customers to switch carriers based on their monthly needs, like bigger data buckets, more reliable connections or cheaper prices. Subscribers traveling can also plug into international carriers' networks and purchase temporary contracts through the iPad, the company said. — Reuters

European clubs fear African players exposed to Ebola risk

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp (pic) is concerned about African players being exposed to the risk of Ebola contamination while on international duty. ― File picBorussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp (pic) is concerned about African players being exposed to the risk of Ebola contamination while on international duty. ― File picBERLIN, Oct 17 ― Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp yesterday raised fears expressed by a growing number of European clubs about African players being exposed to the risk of Ebola contamination while on international duty.

Klopp questioned whether the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to be held in Morocco from January 17 to February 8, should go ahead, while the president of French club Lyon said he had written to FIFA about games involving African countries at the centre of the deadly epidemic.

One Spanish club has already brought back a Guinean international from Cup of Nations duty and AC Milan were forced to deny at the weekend that Ghanaian international Michael Essien had Ebola.

With the Ebola death toll in West Africa now at nearly 4,500, hosts Morocco have called for the Cup of Nations to be postponed. But the Confederaton of African Football (CAF) has insisted that the tournament must start as planned on January 17.

"The fact is that I wonder a lot about this subject," said Klopp. "When a country has the feeling that it cannot find the right solution we should be worried.

"We don't have the right to close our eyes and say: 'we are going to carry on as normal'."

Klopp said he had spoken about the epidemic with Dortmund's Gabonese international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Schalke coach Roberto di Matteo admitted that he is also concerned.

"It's worrying. I know it is dangerous," said di Matteo, who has several African players, including Cameroon striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, in his squad.

Choupo-Moting played for Cameroon on Wednesday in a 2-0 win over Sierra Leone, who have been ordered to play all qualifying games on neutral territory because of the epidemic.

Call for FIFA action

Jean-Michel Aulas, president of French side Lyon, said on Wednesday he had written to world governing body FIFA about teams from countries affected by Ebola.

Two Lyon players, Clinton N'Jie and Henri Bedimo, were in the Cameroon squad for the Sierra Leone game, and Aulas said that his club were considering how to handle the epidemic.

"It is of course a subject to question, and of safety, when you are responsible," Aulas told a press conference.

He said the Union of French Professional Clubs (UCPF) and the European Clubs Association (ECA) should act "in the interests of clubs and also for players."

"I sent a letter to FIFA last week about a certain number of (African) matches that have been moved and the teams from countries affected by the epidemic," Aulas said.

Sierra Leone and Guinea have both been ordered to play their Cup of Nations qualifying matches in neutral countries.

Spanish club Rayo Vallecano ordered Guinean international Lass Bangoura to return from Africa Cup of Nations duty last week because his teammates were afraid of catching Ebola.

"I was upset when I heard that some teammates in the (Rayo) dressing room were worried about me and about Ebola," the 22-year-old attacker said, although he added that he had wanted to leave as he was under contract with the Madrid-based side.

Elsewhere, African news reports set off an alarm over the health of AC Milan midfielder Essien. The Ghanaian's Serie A club Milan "categorically" denied that Essien has Ebola, saying: "Such reports are totally without foundation and what is more were never confirmed by any employee of the club."

Essien put out a statement and photo on Twitter to show he was "very fit and very healthy".

"The Ebola virus is a very serious issue and people shouldn't joke about it. Whoever wrote this article is very unprofessional and insensitive," Essien said. ― AFP
