Ferguson: Getty photographer arrested Posted: 18 Aug 2014 06:02 PM PDT FERGUSON, Aug 19 — Getty Images today confirmed the arrest of one of its photographers covering unrest in a Missouri town where a white police officer shot dead an unarmed black teenager. In a caption with a photograph showing the arrest of Scott Olson, the agency said he was being "placed in a paddy wagon after being arrested by police as he covers the demonstration following the shooting death of Michael Brown". Getty Images did not say why Olson was detained. AFP is an image distribution partner of Getty. The dispute has fueled resentment in Ferguson, a suburb of St Louis with a majority African American population but a mainly white police force — now backed by a detachment of National Guard soldiers. Earlier, President Barack Obama said Attorney General Eric Holder would travel to Ferguson tomorrow to meet with FBI agents and Justice Department officials conducting a federal civil rights probe into the shooting that has revived the nation debate on race relations. — AFP |
Is Pas the king maker? — Lim Mun Fah Posted: 18 Aug 2014 05:58 PM PDT AUGUST 19 — Many people have underestimated the complexity of the political situation in Selangor, and did not expect incumbent Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, who seemed desperate, would lead all to such a stalemate. However, after two Pas state assembly members expressed their support to PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and made the number to become 30 together with PKR and DAP state assembly members, Khalid's remarks claiming that he was supported by the majority of state assembly members have lost credibility. Moreover, Pas' central committee had also decided to support the removal of Khalid, putting Khalid in a hopeless situation. Khalid is once again forced into a corner. He might still wish to defend his post but the momentum has become too week. Some people who had sympathy for him have now been disgusted by his behaviours that have lost the bottom line. Khalid had hinted that he could dissolve the state assembly. He had also filed a complaint with the Registrar of Societies (ROS). The actions he took showed that even if he steps down, he will pull the PKR with him to wallow in the mud. It could even lead to a destruction, even if it might cause the PKR to have its registration revoked. The Sultan's attitude has now become a key deciding the development of the situation So far, the Sultan's seems still backing Khalid. It is also the reason why Khalid has kept mentioning the Sultan. Khalid said that the Sultan ordered him not to make any decisions or announcement at the moment until the Sultan returns on August 27. It is in fact a political reality in Malaysia. If the Sultan does not consent the Mentri Besar candidate named by the PKR, there would be new changes to the crisis and it might take some time to resolve. In fact, Khalid is able to sustain until today due to his biggest patron, Pas. Pas backed him and it seems to be the king-maker of the crisis. However, it might fail in making Khalid the "king" and instead bring harm to itself. Pas' attitude before this was ambiguous. It indicated its members to support Khalid even thought it was part of Pakatan Rakyat. It claimed that it would not leave Pakatan Rakyat, while having some kind of connection with Umno. As a result, a great storm was set off and it led the partnership of the three Pakatan Rakyat component parties into a crisis, while costing Pas its credit and political moral. It had even planted the seed of split in the party. It is tantamount to committing political suicide. Although Pas' central committee eventually decided to support the replacement of Mentri Besar and avoided an internal split, while temporarily allowing Pakatan Rakyat to survive the test, Pas still has to pay a price for its stand and attitude over all these days. After getting itself into the trouble, Chinese voters who have been wary of it might rather cast invalid votes than voting for it. Similarly, the recent religious conversion controversy in the Indian community, as well as the hudud law implementation crisis might have also made it difficult for Indian voters to trust Pas. Even Pas' liberal faction has got sick of the party's recent performance and it is believed that the enlightened and intellectuals in the Malay community are feeling the same. Once the people are in despair, regardless of how much effort it makes, it is afraid that voters might never return. Pas vice-president Datuk Husam Musa said that Pas should not sink with Khalid. It was indeed a wake-up call. Pas has made a last minute turn, but everything seems to have been too late. Just like Khalid who has become increasingly not understandable, the words and deeds of Pas over all these days have been leading the party step-by-step towards sinking! — mysinchew.com * This is the personal opinion of the writer or publication and does not necessarily represent the views of Malay Mail Online. |

Three Bangladeshi nationals feared dead in Kota Damansara MRT mishap Posted: 18 Aug 2014 05:51 PM PDT KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 ― Three MRT construction workers, all Bangladesh nationals, are feared dead after being trapped under a 490-tonne concrete span that collapsed at the MRT worksite near former Rubber Research Institute (RRI) in Kota Damansara last night. MRT Corp in a statement said the workers feared dead are Mohamad Faruk Khan, Mohammad Elahi Hossain and Mohammad Alauddin Mollik but no members of the public were involved in the incident as there was no access to the site. "Rescue efforts are currently on-going and an emergency response team is on standby at the site," the statement said. A span of the MRT guide way had dislodged from its piers and fallen on the ground below at 8.30pm tonight while work to construct the parapet for the guide way was being carried out. The span, which was made up of 14 units of segmented box girders, was 38m in length and weighed 490 tonnes. MRT Corp Chief Executive Officer Datuk Wira Azhar Abdul Hamid who is at the site expressed deep regret over the incident. "Although investigations are underway, MRT Corp assumes full responsibility for the incident. Once investigations are completed, action on those responsible will be taken," he said in a statement. A fire and rescue department spokesman when contacted said the search and rescue operation, which include the K-9 unit, would go on until the bodies, if any was found. "We are using the tunelling approach to dig at the site because the span is too heavy and long to lift," said the spokesman. ― Bernama |
‘Turtles’ outmuscle Stallone’s ‘Expendables’at box office Posted: 18 Aug 2014 05:46 PM PDT LOS ANGELES, Aug 19 — The "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" kept a lock on the top spot at the North American box office at the weekend, outmuscling Sylvester Stallone's latest "Expendables" action-hero installment, industry data showed yesterday. The famous pizza-munching turtles, on a mission to save New York from diabolical evil-doers plotting to unleash a virus, raked in US$28.5 million (RM89.9 million) in their second weekend in theatres, box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations reported. The turtles remained just ahead of Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" in second place, the critically acclaimed science-fiction superhero romp which added another US$25.1 million to its three-week haul of US$222.7 million. Third spot was taken by raunchy adult comedy "Let's Be Cops," starring Damon Wayans Jr, about two friends who become entangled in criminal intrigue when they dress up as police officers for a costume party. The film, which has been savaged by overwhelmingly negative reviews, still took in US$17.8 million in its opening weekend, meaning the film will turn a profit after costing around US$17 million to make. It also elbowed past the veteran action heroes of Sylvester Stallone's geriatric "The Expendables 3." The latest installlment in the light-hearted action romp took just US$15.9 million on its opening weekend to finish in fourth. The first two films in "The Expendables" series had taken US$34.8 million and US$28.6 million in their opening weekends, suggesting that interest in the franchise, which groups together a galaxy of action stars including Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wesley Snipes, Jet Li, Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford, is firmly on the wane. In fifth place was dystopian drama "The Giver" based on Lois Lowry's 1993 novel of the same name. The film, starring Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep and Brenton Thwaites, earned US$12.3 million. Turbulent weather disaster movie "Into The Storm" was in sixth place with US$7.9 million while "The Hundred Foot Journey," a romantic comedy with Helen Mirren and Om Puri as culture-clashing restaurateurs, was seventh with US$7.2 million. French action film "Lucy," starring Scarlett Johansson as a drug mule with telekinetic powers, was eighth with US$5.5 million in its fourth week in theatres. Ninth place was taken by dance movie "Step Up All In," which took US$2.7 million. Rounding out the top 10 was "Hercules" which earned US$2.1 million. — AFP |
