LONDON: Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Saturday (Aug 16) urged Scotland to stay in the United Kingdom, saying independence would be cheered by enemies of justice and freedom.

Abbott's comments to The Times newspaper are the strongest given yet by a major foreign leader on the Scottish independence debate, and follow on from calls from US President Barack Obama to keep the union intact.

"As a friend of Britain, as an observer from afar, it's hard to see how the world would be helped by an independent Scotland," said Abbott. "I think that the people who would like to see the break-up of the United Kingdom are not the friends of justice, the friends of freedom, and the countries that would cheer at the prospect … are not the countries whose company one would like to keep."

Scotland goes to the polls on September 18 to decide whether to break away from the 307-year-old union with England.

Obama last month backed the union, saying: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, during a visit to London in June, also said he wanted a "strong, prosperous and united United Kingdom".

A spokesman for Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, who is leading the pro-independence campaign, said Abbott had "put his foot in it". "Tony Abbott has a reputation for gaffes, but his bewildering comments have all the hallmarks of one of the Westminster government's international briefings against Scotland," he said.

"Many Australians, including the great number with close Scottish connections, will look on in bafflement at these remarks – Australia is a country that has gained its independence from Westminster and has never looked back." - AFP

Nigeria trains 800 volunteers to fight Ebola epidemic

LAGOS: Nigeria has trained 800 volunteers to help fight the deadly Ebola epidemic that has already claimed four lives in Africa's most populous country, a regional governor spokesman said on Saturday (Aug 16). Authorities in the country's largest city of Lagos last week appealed for volunteers to make up for a shortage of medical personnel because of a six-week doctors' strike over pay.

"People have heeded our call for service," said Hakeem Bello, a spokesman for Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola. "We have trained some 800 volunteers in the area of contact tracing, sensitisation and treatment of the Ebola disease."

Four people have died and six more infected by Ebola in Nigeria as part of the worst-ever outbreak of the deadly virus, which has killed 1,145 people across west Africa since the outbreak began this year.

Volunteers have so far been deployed to 57 districts of Nigeria, Bello said, adding that more are needed to contain the outbreak, particularly to treat those infected with the disease.

Nigerian doctors have been on strike nationwide since July 1 to demand a pay rise and better working conditions. In response, Lagos' state government has stepped up a media campaign to raise awareness of how to prevent the spread of the disease, including across radio, television and public health announcements.

Nigeria became the fourth west African country to be hit by the Ebola epidemic last month after Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Athletes from Nigeria have been forced to withdraw from the Youth Olympics in China as a result of the outbreak, Chinese state media reported on Saturday. The International Olympic Committee has barred athletes from Ebola-hit countries from competing in pool events and combat sports.

The disease is spread by contact with an infected person's bodily fluids such as sweat, blood and tissue and no cure or vaccine is currently available. The last days of an Ebola victim can be grim, characterised by agonising muscular pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and catastrophic haemorrhaging described as "bleeding out" as vital organs break down.

Nigeria's first fatality was Liberian government employee Patrick Sawyer, who brought the virus to Lagos, sub-Saharan Africa's largest city, on July 20. He died in hospital on July 25. Nigeria has not recorded a case outside Lagos but there were fears that a nurse who contracted Ebola from Sawyer at the hospital may have carried the virus to the key southeastern city of Enugu. - AFP

KUCHING: Pengawa magi zon tauka kandang endur ngagai pengeraja pengawa tauka raban kaunsilor, sebengkah ari chara Majlis Bandaraya Kuching Selatan (MBKS) meri servis ke ngasi agi ngagai raban bansa ke dipegai sida (MBKS).

Datuk Bandar MBKS, Datuk James Chan madah, nengah chara nya raban kaunsilor ulih ngempitka diri semak agi enggau raban bansa.

Berindik ari nya Chan ngelalau raban bansa madahka terus penanggul enggau peminta sida ngagai MBKS nengah bala Kaunsilor ke megai zon nya.

"Diatu kami (MBKS) udah bisi zon lalu raban Kaunsilor udah bisi berubah runding ke alai sida deka meri servis ke manah agi nengah chara betemu enggau raban bansa.

"Enti bisi penanggul, kaunsilor kami ke megai zon nya deka mantu, berati sereta mendingka penanggul raban bansa.

"Tu sebengkah ari chara MBKS, laban kami deka ngangkatka raban bansa seraya nyadika mengeri Kuching manah sereta ngerembaika mansang, nya alai aram meh kitai semua beserakup," ku iya.

Chan mansutka pekara tu ba jaku pengelalu iya maya pengerami Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri MBKS begulai enggau Komuniti 2014, ti diatur ba Lobi MBKS, ditu ensanus.

Nyerumba pengerami nya kemari, MBKS mega ngintu hari pengada 72 iku pengereja pengawa MBKS.

Kelimpah ari nya MBKS mega nyuaka perais mata duit ngagai anak kaban SOREKA (kelab MBKS) ti nyulut dalam peresa perintah baka UPSR (dua iku), PMR (empat iku) enggau SPM (lima iku).

LUNDU: Scenes of people from various races socialising, eating, and drinking together are ubiquitous in the state.

In fact, when they get together, there's always bound to be smiles and laughter all around because there are no threats to worry about.

Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem said this is what Sarawak is all about, the 'proud Land of the Hornbill', and everyone should do their bit to preserve this unique feature so that the state could become a model of peace and harmony for others to emulate.

The chief minister said things were a bit different in the peninsula.

"In West Malaysia, there are only three major races and a few indigenous people, but they never stop bickering. It is stupid.

"Here we have 35 races and yet we are very peaceful and live in unity and harmony," he said at a Hari Raya gathering at Lundu Sport Complex yesterday.

Adenan said everyone should be thankful they could live in peace and harmony. They only have to look at the gruesome conflicts in the Middle East and in Africa to know what disunity and wars could bring.

"If we read the news or watch television, the Arabs, the Palestinians, and the Africans never stop killing each other. It is very bad."

Touching on development, Adenan said his administration would continue to develop all corners of the state, including Lundu district.

Meanwhile, Lundu District Officer Hamsien Atar said it was important for everyone, young and old, to respect each other and be forgiving in order to uphold unity.

During the gathering, Adenan's wife Puan Sri Dato Jamilah Anu was presented with a birthday cake.

Present were Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Datin Feona Junaidi, Assistant Minister of Industrial Development Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie and his wife Datin Rose Sanden, and acting Kuching Resident Zamahari Saidi.
