Van Gaal’s United lose opener, Arsenal and Spurs win Posted: 16 Aug 2014 05:46 PM PDT LONDON, Aug 17 — Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal found no instant fix as a new era dawned in dispiriting fashion at Old Trafford where Swansea City's 2-1 victory on the opening day of the Premier League reopened old wounds. United's new captain Wayne Rooney had cancelled out Ki Sung-yueng's neat goal for the visitors shortly after halftime but Gylfi Sigurdsson's late strike condemned the Old Trafford side to their first opening-day top-flight home defeat for 42 years. "It was a disastrous start for us but we have to move on," Rooney said. "We're not happy, the manager's not happy. "We'll have to go through what went wrong during the week. We'll do that. I thought today we didn't play as well together as a team as we can do. We have to put that right." Arsenal, tipped as serious title contenders this term, left it late to beat manager-less Crystal Palace, with Aaron Ramsey pouncing in stoppage time to earn a 2-1 victory at the Emirates after the home side had slipped behind. Tottenham Hotspur, who finished one place above United in sixth last season, began life under new manager Mauricio Pochettino with a 1-0 win at London rivals West Ham United thanks to a stoppage-time goal from new signing Eric Dier. Promoted Leicester City twice battled back to draw 2-2 with Everton, while West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland also shared four goals – Saido Berahino scoring twice for the hosts. Queens Park Rangers were beaten 1-0 at home by Hull City on their return to the top flight, missing a penalty in the process, while Aston Villa earned a notable three points with a 1-0 win at Stoke City – Andreas Weimann grabbing the goal. Champions Manchester City visit Newcastle United on Sunday after Liverpool entertain Southampton while Chelsea will travel to promoted Burnley on Monday. Lack of pace A year ago almost to the day Manchester United enjoyed a comfortable victory at Swansea but it proved one of the few highlights for former manager David Moyes who was sacked in May. After a buoyant pre-season campaign, the fans arrived on Saturday hoping new boss Van Gaal would right the wrongs of last season but the problems, notably a lack of pace and invention, returned to haunt the 20-times champions who looked vulnerable. Van Gaal began with his favoured 3-5-2 system but changed to an orthodox 4-4-2 at halftime and on Saturday's evidence there will be lots of tinkering to come for the Dutchman who has won league titles with Ajax Amsterdam, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. United dominated possession in the first half but offered little attacking verve against a Swansea side content to sit deep and wait for the occasional counter-attack. One such break saw Nathan Dyer flick the ball on to Sigurdsson down the right and the Iceland international burst forward before teeing up Ki to beat keeper David De Gea just before the half-hour mark. When Rooney hooked in Juan Mata's corner in the 53rd minute to restore parity and then clipped the post with a curling free kick the home side looked set for a comeback victory. However, Swansea had other ideas and Ecuadorean substitute Jefferson Montero's dangerous cross caused problems in United's unfamiliar-looking defence and the ball eventually came to Sigurdsson, back at Swansea after leaving Spurs, to fire home. "It's more than disappointing for the fans," said Van Gaal, who was without Netherlands striker Robin van Persie through injury and the likes of defensive stalwarts Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, both of whom left in the close season. "They are expecting a lot because we have won every game in pre-season. Then you lose the first match. That's disappointing for the fans, also for the players and also for me. "It's a very bad day for us," he added. Saviour Ramsey Arsenal, with former Barcelona hitman Alexis Sanchez making his Premier League debut, were stunned by a Palace side reeling from the departure of manager Tony Pulis 48 hours earlier. Brede Hangeland's glancing header gave Palace a 35th minute lead but Laurent Koscielny nodded home a free kick from Sanchez on the stroke of halftime to equalise. Palace seemed to have earned a point with a stubborn defensive display but Welshman Ramsey tucked in a rebound after Mathieu Debuchy's shot was half-saved by Julian Speroni. Palace had been reduced to 10 men shortly before Arsenal's late winner when Jason Puncheon received a second yellow card. Ramsey's goal secured the day's only Premier League home win with Arsenal's relieved manager Arsene Wenger fully aware of the difficulties of winning the opening league fixture. "If you look at the (earlier) results today, no home team won, we were the only one so it shows in the first game it is not easy to win. Our desire got us through," he said. — Reuters |
Germany urged to relax iron grip on salaries Posted: 16 Aug 2014 05:31 PM PDT BERLIN, Aug 17 — Germany must increase workers' salaries to help its neighbours out of the economic slump, the European Union's employment commissioner Laszlo Andor said yesterday. The Hungarian said Berlin's big foreign trade surplus was hurting its European partners, and urged it to stimulate domestic demand by increasing wages and public expenditure. "The rise in salaries has fallen behind the rise in productivity in Germany" for more than a decade, Andor told the German conservative daily Die Welt, in an interview due to be published today. Brussels was now urging Germany, the EU's economic powerhouse, to relax its iron grip on wages, which he said was "indispensible" for the recovery of the rest of the region. "It would be better if salaries rise in parallel with productivity," Andor added. His comments come amid signs of stalling growth in the 18-member eurozone, particularly its largest economies Germany and France, as the bloc struggles to recover from years of financial crisis. Brussels now appears to be taking a view long championed by France that a rise in German salaries would give the struggling eurozone a much-needed stimulus. France's President Francois Hollande this month called on Berlin to boost spending as "the best favour Germany could do for France and for Europe" to help growth. "It's very important that Germany increases public spending, stimulates demand and reduces its excessive trade surplus, which is hurting its European neighbours," Andor said. "Changing wage policy is indispensible, the Commission believes," he told the paper. Bundesbank chief Jens Weidmann last month said German wages have scope to rise as much as three per cent because "we are practically in a situation of full employment". This runs counter to many on the German right, including Chancellor Angela Merkel, who believe its low wage policy has given the country its competitive edge. Pay remains a prickly issue in Germany, which has just approved its first national minimum wage to come into effect in January 2015, despite stiff opposition from employers. — AFP |
Wenger may field German World Cup stars for Euro tie Posted: 16 Aug 2014 05:31 PM PDT LONDON, Aug 17 — Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits he is considering bringing his German World Cup winners back into the squad ahead of schedule for the first leg of Tuesday's Champions League play-off at Besiktas. The Gunners travel to Turkey having made heavy weather of their opening Premier League fixture at home to manager-less Crystal Palace, where a stoppage-time goal from Aaron Ramsey secured a 2-1 victory against a side reduced to 10 men. Wenger had given German trio Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski extra time off following their nation's triumph in Brazil last month. But with Kieran Gibbs having suffered a hamstring injury against Palace and Jack Wilshere also taken off early following a heavy challenge, the Frenchman admitted he was tempted to issue a recall notice. "The Champions League qualifier is a massive game for us against Besiktas, we have a short time to recover," said Wenger. "Normally the German players would not play in that game. We will have to see on Sunday but only in case of emergency. "Because of the physicality and the organisation level of Crystal Palace it was very difficult for us. We conceded a goal from the first corner they had because we still lack a bit of pace in the final third when we build up into dangerous situations. "But we kept going and it was enough to win the game. On the first day of the season we were the only team to win at home so that shows you it is difficult for everybody on the first day. We got the three points we wanted, let's focus now on Besiktas." Marquee summer signing Alexis Sanchez endured a frustrating Premier League debut against a physical Palace side. The Chile forward, who cost £30million from Barcelona, looked like a player who was getting used to new surroundings. Sanchez struggles "I am very happy with his attitude because he kept on fighting for 90 minutes, even if he is not completely ready physically," Wenger said. "Tactically he needs to improve his understanding with his partners but he looked lively and dangerous until the end." Palace were seconds away from securing a point having taken the lead through Brede Hangeland's header from a corner, with Laurent Koscielny equalising just before half-time. It was still level when Jason Puncheon was sent off for two bookable offences with a minute to go. A draw would have been a remarkable result given that manager Tony Pulis had quit on Thursday night because the board had only given him three new players in the close season, of which Hangeland was one. Caretaker manager Keith Millen made it clear that with the transfer window soon shutting a replacement needed to be brought in as soon as possible — and the players given a full explanation of the board's plans. "Tony loved working with this group day in, day out and you couldn't ask for a group that works harder," he said. "But the players need to know which direction the club is going. "Hopefully at the start of the week there will be some more answers. We know we can compete at this level but we have got to get more competition for places. The players are waiting to be given a new direction on the field and off the field. "We've identified all the summer the areas we need to strengthen but for whatever reason that's not happened. "The three players we've brought in all had excellent debuts and have made us better but there are areas where we need to strengthen as a club. Tony knew what players he wanted and the club do." Millen is open to taking the job permanently but it is understood he is not being considered as a front-line candidate. — AFP |
