Malaysia's ringgit strengthened before economic data, while crop futures declined.

The MSCI Asia Pacific Index was little changed by 9:32 am in Tokyo, rising 2.6 per cent this week, the first advance in August. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 Index gained 0.4 per cent, set for the highest close this month, while Japan's Topix gauge lost 0.2 per cent. Standard & Poor's 500 Index futures fell 0.1 per cent after the index reached at its highest level since July 30. The ringgit advanced a fifth day, touching a three-week high, with Malaysian growth projected to have slowed last quarter. Contracts on wheat, corn and soybeans dropped.

Global stocks rallied this week as signs the global recovery may be losing steam stoked bets central banks will maintain stimulus. The US posted worse-than-forecast jobless claims and retail-sales data, Chinese credit expansion plunged, the euro area said growth unexpectedly stalled in the second quarter and Japan reported a contraction. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki stepped down yesterday to end a political impasse amid the Islamist insurgency in the country's north.

"Geopolitical tensions eased somewhat," Tim Schroeders, who helps manage US$1 billion (RM3.81 billion) in equities at Pengana Capital Ltd. in Melbourne, said by phone. "We've seen a myriad of weaker- than-expected economic data from Japan to Europe and even to the US. That's buoyed investor sentiment with regards to maintaining monetary stimulus longer."

More Ebola treatment from Tekmira, says CEO

Posted: 14 Aug 2014 05:48 PM PDT

TORONTO, Aug 13 — Canada's Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corp is exploring the possibility of making more of its experimental Ebola treatment, Chief Executive Officer Mark Murray said on Wednesday.

Making more of the treatment would take months, he said on a conference call to discuss quarterly results.

Tekmira also said it was discussing options for its experimental Ebola treatment with governments and other agencies, including the World Health Organisation.

The company said it was in talks on whether its drug could be used to treat patients infected with the deadly virus, "within accepted clinical and regulatory protocols."

"Our therapeutic, TKM-Ebola, is currently an unapproved agent and the regulatory framework to support its use in Africa has not yet been established," Tekmira said in a statement.

"Given the severity of the situation, we are carefully evaluating options for use of our investigational drug ... this includes discussions with government agencies and NGO's, including the WHO, in various countries on the potential use of TKM-Ebola to treat Ebola virus infected individuals." — ReutersNigeria's Minister of Health Onyebuchi Chukwu (2nd right), Information Minister Labaran Maku (right), Interior Minister Abba Moro (2nd left) and Minister of State for Health Khaliru al-Hassan attend a media briefing on Ebola updates in Abuja, August 14. — Reuters picNigeria's Minister of Health Onyebuchi Chukwu (2nd right), Information Minister Labaran Maku (right), Interior Minister Abba Moro (2nd left) and Minister of State for Health Khaliru al-Hassan attend a media briefing on Ebola updates in Abuja, August 14. — Reuters pic

The MSCI Asia Pacific Index traded at 147.78 as of 9:02am in Tokyo. It's headed for a 2.5 per cent rally this week, the most since the period ended March 28. President Vladimir Putin said Russia will do everything it can to stop the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

"Geopolitical tensions eased somewhat," said Tim Schroeders, a portfolio manager who helps manage US$1 billion (RM3.18 billion) in equities at Pengana Capital Ltd. in Melbourne. "We've seen a myriad of weaker-than-expected economic data from Japan to Europe and even to the US. That's buoyed investor sentiment with regards to maintaining monetary stimulus longer."

Japan's Topix index rose less than 0.1 per cent. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 Index slipped 0.1 per cent, while New Zealand's NZX 50 Index added 0.1 per cent. Markets are yet to open in Hong Kong and China.

Russia proposed a cease-fire for humanitarian aid deliveries to war-torn parts of southeastern Ukraine as a convoy of aid trucks from Moscow waited near the border with rebel-held areas. Even as Russia struck a conciliatory note, journalists at news outlets including Novoye Vremya and Hromadske TV reported seeing armoured personnel vehicles crossing into Ukraine.

European growth

The euro area's recovery unexpectedly stalled in the second quarter as its three biggest economies failed to grow, underlining the vulnerability of the region to weak inflation and the deepening crisis in Ukraine.

The monetary union's gross domestic product in the three months through June was unchanged from the first quarter, when it increased 0.2 per cent, Eurostat, the European Union's statistics office in Luxembourg, said yesterday.

This week, data showed Japan's economy contracted the most since 2011, China credit growth and industrial production missed estimates, and US retail sales stalled.

Futures on the Standard & Poor's 500 Index were little changed today. The measure gained 0.4 per cent yesterday after a report showed applications for unemployment benefits rose more than forecast last week. Jobless claims climbed to the highest in six weeks, according to the Labor Department.

Futures on Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index and contracts on the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index added 0.4 per cent in their most recent trading session. The Bloomberg China-US Index of Chinese stocks traded in the US fell 0.6 per cent yesterday.

The Asia-Pacific gauge traded at 13.6 times estimated earnings at the last close compared with 16.4 for the S&P 500 and 15.1 for the Stoxx Europe 600 Index, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. — Bloomberg

Makelele’s Bastia out to frustrate PSG

The Corsicans are now coached by former France midfielder Claude Makelele, who gave up his position as Laurent Blanc's assistant at the Parc des Princes to become a coach in his own right.

Makelele also finished his playing career as captain of PSG and his presence on the opposition bench adds extra intrigue to a game that carries real importance to the hosts after they kicked off the campaign with a 2-2 draw at Reims.

"I am very happy that things have turned out this way and I can't wait to be at the Parc des Princes," said Makelele of the prospect of returning to Paris after last week's 3-3 draw with Marseille, another of his old clubs.

Makelele's previous job means he knows exactly how PSG will set themselves up, but he played down Bastia's chances of recording a first ever win in this fixture.

"Laurent Blanc has a clear philosophy and he will not change just because I have been his assistant," said the 41-year-old.

"I know well enough how things work there to have an idea of what to expect but I have no miracle recipe. Nobody can compare themselves with PSG in Ligue 1. In my view, no team will go to the Parc and win. But we will do everything to be the only ones who do."

PSG, who have now failed to win their opening game in any of the four seasons since the Qatari takeover in the capital, were dealt a blow on Monday when captain Thiago Silva suffered a hamstring injury in a 2-1 friendly victory against Napoli that will rule him out for several weeks.

Blanc has been criticised for bringing Silva back so soon after he was afforded a long summer break, and he may now be tempted to give new recruit David Luiz a little longer to build up his fitness.

"Thiago Silva did not return to training too soon. If we need to blame someone for this injury then I plead guilty. I take responsibility," Blanc said.

On the prospect of coming up against his old assistant, he added: "I didn't expect him to leave us but I am not disappointed. It was his wish, his choice to seize the opportunity."

Monaco look to bounce back

There are seven new coaches in Ligue 1 this season and the only one to lose on his debut was Leonardo Jardim, whose Monaco side were beaten 2-1 at home by Lorient despite seeing fit-again Radamel Falcao come off the bench and score a penalty.

They will look to bounce back at Bordeaux, whose new coach Willy Sagnol is a former Monaco player.

"Like Monaco, Bordeaux have a new coach who advocates attacking football so we can expect a good game. We know we need to react after the defeat against Lorient," said Monaco goalkeeper Danijel Subasic, who will miss the influence in central defence of suspended captain Ricardo Carvalho.

Lille go to promoted Caen today in a game brought forward to help them prepare for the first leg of their Champions League play-off against Porto next Wednesday.

The northern club are desperate to progress in Europe, but Lille coach Rene Girard has reminded his side that Ligue 1 remains their bread and butter.

"Within the squad, we are not talking about Europe. The number one objective remains the league, even if competing in the Champions League is very important," he said ahead of a meeting with a Caen side that won 3-0 at Evian last week.
