Argentine striker Carlos Tevez was the inspiration for Massimiliano Allegri's men as he struck either side of half-time to move top of the scoring charts in Italy with his third and fourth goals of the campaign as Juve responded to Roma's 2-0 win against Hellas Verona earlier in the day.

Alvaro Morata headed home a late third with seven minutes left of a match that hinged on a missed penalty by the hosts with the score at 1-0.

"It's a great victory because Roma had won and we were in a position where we had to win which is not easy," said Allegri.

Both Juventus and Roma, the favourites for the title, improved their record to five wins from five, with a two-goal advantage keeping the Turin club top on goal difference.

Juventus are away to Spanish champions Atletico Madrid in Champions League action on Wednesday while Roma travel to Manchester City 24 hours earlier.

The leading duo then meet in a top-of-the-table clash at the Juventus Stadium next Sunday.

Tevez, who was left out of the Argentina squad for upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Hong Kong by new coach Gerardo Martino, again showed the class that made him a three-time South American player of the year.

A close-range finish put the visitors in front on 35 minutes before the turning point of the match on the hour mark.

Giorgio Chiellini gave away a penalty and a golden chance for Atalanta to equalise but Gianluigi Buffon easily saved German Denis's weak low spot-kick to maintain his record of not having let in a goal this season.

From Buffon's clearance, Juventus marched down the pitch allowing former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra to set up Tevez, who drove a low shot inside the post from just outside the box.

"The difference between Buffon and the other goalkeepers is that he always knows how to be decisive. At the end, that is the difference between great champions and average players," added Allegri.

Earlier, Rudi Garcia's men also made it five wins on the trot, but were pushed all the way by Verona before Italian international Alessandro Florenzi struck a sweet opener with 15 minutes remaining.

Mattia Destro then fired home a looping shot from just inside the Verona half, a spectacular effort that sent the away side to their first defeat of the season after opening with two wins and two draws.

It was also the perfect result for Francesco Totti, the Roma legend who has scored 235 goals in 21 seasons for the club, and celebrated his 38th birthday yesterday.

"We did well to be patient and, in big matches like this, it is important to start well which is what we did," said Garcia.

"We needed to get more shots on target but I told them at half-time to be more efficient and wait for the right moments.

"When you have more than 20 shots, sooner or later you will score and we got the win thanks to big goals from Florenzi and Destro," added the Frenchman.

Verona, the champions in 1985, remain sixth, but are now seven points behind Juventus and Roma.

Destro's effort was especially pleasing for Garcia.

"There was class and instinct to Destro's goal. Immediately after he controlled the ball with his chest, he let go with a long shot and it was the skill of a pure striker," said the former Lille coach.

There will be six matches today, including fourth-placed Inter Milan at home to rock bottom Cagliari, while Udinese, who came into the weekend in third spot, are not in action until Monday when they host Parma. — AFP

EPL: Liverpool’s Rodgers upbeat with Derby draw, vows more to come

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard scored his 10th goal in 32 appearances against their city rivals shortly after the hour mark in the Premier League contest at Anfield yesterday.

However, Everton skipper Phil Jagielka ensured the 223rd meeting between the near neighbours ended all square when he equalised in injury time with a spectacular long-range strike.

Liverpool, last season's runners-up, have won just twice in six Premier League games so far this season but manager Rodgers insisted they were unfortunate not to have taken all three points.

"Certainly we didn't get what we deserved," he said.

"We were much the better side. When you concede a goal like that, it shows the luck that went against us.

"But I thought the intensity was getting back up to near where we have been for 19 months. Tactically, I thought we were very good in the game.

"We defended very well. We took the lead, we should have arguably had at least two more (goals) and we should have had a penalty," the Northern Irishman added.

"It was disappointing to only get a point, but I think the performance, which I'm clearly looking to at the moment, was at a much better level than we have been at.

"I never felt in any danger in the game. I felt the organisation was very good with good concentration and with the ball we were a real threat.

"When you concede so late, they virtually had nothing, it is a little bit frustrating."

Rodgers singled out England midfielder Adam Lallana for praise and believes the influence of the close-season signing from Southampton will continue to grow over the course of the campaign.

"I thought Adam was outstanding," Rodgers said. "He came in to his first derby game and played with that quality and intensity.

"To deliver that performance was great because it shows me he is getting fitter and fitter. He was a constant threat."

Liverpool were unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty when Raheem Sterling's shot was blocked by the raised arms of Everton midfielder Gareth Barry, with Rodgers adamant that referee Martin Atkinson should have pointed to the spot.

Martinez proud of Jagielka

Meanwhile, Everton manager Roberto Martinez insisted England centre-half Jagielka's goal was a just reward for the captain, who has been the subject of criticism for both club and country this season.

"I was so proud. He cares for this club like no-one else," Martinez said. "It was an example of his belief in himself and the responsibility he has.

"I don't think I have seen a better strike in live football," the Spaniard added.

"Someone like Phil takes responsibility and got a lot of unfair criticism from the outside. That is the way to face adversity.

"When you look at some of the reports of Phil's England performances, and because of our defensive record this season, there was talk of a World Cup hangover, and that was unfair."

Martinez said the manner in which Everton battled back would give them confidence after a difficult start where they've won just once in six league matches and conceded 14 goals in the process.

"It was a real test of character," Martinez said.

"We all know that for 15 years we have not won (at Anfield). What we got is the most pleasing result we had this season.

"Last season, was technically the best performance we gave and we lost 4-0. I couldn't be prouder to get a point."

Everton will, however, have to do without Kevin Mirallas for a period after he limped out of the match with a hamstring injury. The Belgian winger now looks set for a spell on the sidelines.

"It is a bad hamstring, a bad soft tissue for Kevin," Martinez said. "It is getting used to playing so many games. It is unfortunate we lost someone like him." — Reuters

No, we are not biased in enforcement, DBKL tells Bumi traders

Posted: 27 Sep 2014 05:44 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 — Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has denied claims by certain parties that it had singled out and acted aggressively against Bumiputera traders while enforcing the law here.

Its director general Datuk Mhd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz said DBKL does not practise biasness.

"We are not biased. Traders must abide by the rules and can only conduct their business where they have been permitted. If they fail to do so we would seize and remove their goods," he told reporters.

Mohd Amin Nordin said this after closing a state level school drug-related crime prevention carnival here today.

On the video clip that purportedly showed a DBKL enforcement officer using force on a trader who was operating without a license at Taman Tasik Permaisuri, last week, he said his officers were not involved.

He said a police report had been lodged on the video lasting two minutes and 52 seconds, which was circulated in the social media to smear DBKL's image. — Bernama

French militants suspected of waging clashes in Syria brought to court

Three Frenchmen arrested in Turkey after travelling to Syria have been charged with planning terrorist acts. — Reuters picPARIS, Sept 28 — Three Frenchmen arrested in Turkey after travelling to Syria were charged yesterday with planning terrorist acts, one of their lawyers said.

The men, who were the subject of a high-profile judicial bungle this week after their arrest in Turkey, were being charged with "criminal association with the aim of planning terrorist acts", said lawyer Pierre Dunac told AFP.

The trio include the 29-year-old brother-in-law of Toulouse jihadist Mohamed Merah, who was shot dead by police after he murdered seven people, including a rabbi and three Jewish children, in a 2012 killing spree.

Another is Imad Jjebali, Merah's childhood friend, who was already convicted in 2009 for ties to a jihadi network in Iraq.

Dunac said the men admit travelling to Syria but deny having fought there and that they were plotting terrorist attacks in France.

"They realised over there that it wasn't what they thought it would be, and they fled in order to go home," said Dunac, who is representing Jjebali, adding that his client "does not present a danger to France."

The men were initially arrested in Turkey, reportedly on suspicion of being part of a network that recruited jihadists for Syria.

But in a series of glaring mishaps, they were allowed to walk free after arriving in France.

First, French authorities announced Tuesday they had arrested the men upon their arrival at Paris's Orly airport. Then it turned out the men had not flown to Paris at all.

In fact, Turkish authorities had placed them on a plane to the southern city of Marseille, where they were — to their great surprise — able to walk free after being released from Turkish custody.

In a further bungle, passport control failed to flag the men as suspicious, as a security databank was out of order at the time.

They handed themselves over to police on Wednesday, and were flown to Paris where they appeared before an anti-terrorist judge.

A different judge was to decide later whether the men will be held or released pending the investigation.

French authorities are wary about nationals who have travelled to Syria and Iraq — where the radical Islamic State controls large areas — and may return to their home country to stage attacks.

After Mohamed Merah's death it emerged that he had visited Pakistan and Afghanistan prior to his attacks and had been on the radar of French intelligence, who had gravely underestimated the threat he posed.

All three men charged yesterday were already subject to investigation in a case opened in September 2013, and which has led to convictions for two others.

That investigation focussed on the so-called "Artigat" network of jihadists named for the village in southern France where they were reportedly based. — AFP

Jayalalithaa to four years in jail in a graft case, according to television reports.

Supporters of Jayalalithaa's party — All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, or AIADMK — burned buses in some parts of the state, causing several businesses to close their shutters, TV channel CNN IBN reported. They also clashed with supporters of Tamil Nadu's main opposition party, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, or DMK, the Press Trust of India reported.

"Today a special court convicted Jayalalithaa and her associates and sentenced them to imprisonment," G. Bhavani Singh, special public prosecutor on the case, said in a televised press briefing. She has also been fined a billion Indian rupees (RM53million), he said.

Jayalalithaa was accused of acquiring wealth illegally and was tried by a special court in India's Bangalore state in an 18-year-old case. She was booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly having assets that were disproportionate to her known sources of income. V. Maitreyan, an AIADMK member in the upper house of India's parliament, declined to comment on the matter.

The state of Tamil Nadu has been a base for multinationals including Finnish mobile-communications company Nokia Oyj and Texas-based computer manufacturer maker Dell Inc. Global automakers including Hyundai Motor Co, South Korea's largest carmaker, have set up production plants there.

Emotional outburst

"There will be an emotional outburst and some sort of disturbance, probably for a day or two," M.R. Venkatesh, an independent analyst who writes about Indian politics, said by phone from Chennai, the state capital. "If violence escalates, the central government has to interfere."

Jayalalithaa, 66, was elected as head of the state in 2011. She has served in that capacity on three other occasions in the past since joining the AIADMK as a member in 1982. Her party isn't currently a part of either India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party or an alliance that includes the nation's main opposition Congress party. It has supported governments led by both Congress and the BJP in the past.

Jayalalithaa's supporters, mostly from lower classes, call her "amma", which means mother or goddess in Tamil. They are known for their devotion and have painted her portrait in blood, and walked on hot coals to prove their loyalty.

A former film actress, Jayalalithaa sang and danced in Tamil-language movies in the 1960s and 1970s before entering politics. When in power with the BJP between March 1998 and April 1999, she used her influence to demand key posts for her lawmakers and the dismissal of others. Eventually she pulled out of the coalition, triggering fresh elections.

In 2001, Jayalalithaa was barred from legislative elections in Tamil Nadu on charges of corruption. She was convicted in October 2000 in a case involving the sale of government land to a company promoted by her and an associate at a price lower than market value while she was chief minister of the state. The loss to the state exchequer was put at 40 million rupees. — Bloomberg
