Second-half goals from Carroll, Morgan Amalfitano and Stewart Downing secured all three points for the east London club in front of the Upton Park home crowd following a run of four games without a win,

Defeat saw Hull — punished for failing to take advantage of their early chances — remain in the bottom three, still a point from safety.

Asked if West Ham could qualify for Europe, England striker Carroll told Sky Sports: "There's a belief in the dressing room, I don't see why not.

"We haven't had a win in the last few games but we've had the performances that can take us up to the top.

After a goalless first half, the Hammers took the lead in the 49th minute when Hull goalkeeper Allan McGregor could only tamely parry a shot from Enner Valencia and striker Carroll got in front of the covering defence to seize on the loose ball from close range.

Valencia thought he had made it 2-0 in the 57th minute after running on to a fine pass from Alex Song but his 'goal' was disallowed for offside, although replays suggested he was level.

But the hosts doubled their lead through Amalfitano, who scored five minutes after being sent on as a substitute for Mark Noble by Hammers manager Sam Allardyce.

Valencia was again the provider, his pass finding Amalfitano, who then produced a sublime finish to chip McGregor in the 69th minute.

West Ham then piled on the agony for Steve Bruce's visitors three minutes later when Song's 45-yard pass through the middle evaded the Hull defence completely, allowing the onrushing Downing to finish with aplomb.

Five minutes from time, West Ham almost made it 4-0 but Kevin Nolan's shot came back off the crossbar.

It might have been a different story had Hull turned their early opportunities into goals.

They should have been ahead when Sone Aluko, whose pace repeatedly caused problems for the West Ham defence, produced an excellent cut-back only for Ahmed Elmohady to drag his shot wide.

Aluko then carved out an excellent opportunity for himself after going past James Tomkins on his way into the box but the Nigerian lingered too long over his shot and gave James Collins the time to block his shot. — AFP

"We want to protect the interests of the people," Najib said.

Eto'o has been linked with Sampdoria for the past two weeks and has already agreed terms with the Genoa-based club, according to a website report on Rai Sport on Friday.

The report said the deal was "practically done" and that "Eto'o is expected to arrive in the coming days".

But Ferrero, speaking to Rai Sport after his side's 2-0 away win at Chievo moved Samp up to fourth in Serie A, said: "We're waiting on the okay from Everton. I've met the lad, he's a champion."

Everton manager Roberto Martinez indicated last Wednesday that Eto'o could be about to leave Goodison Park after revealing that two clubs had shown an interest in the veteran forward.

Eto'o, 33, missed Everton's FA Cup third-round penalty shootout defeat at West Ham United tomorrow and Martinez said that his future at the club was under discussion.

"With Samuel, we have a really good relationship and we are looking at his situation," Martinez told reporters.

"We had a couple of clubs contact us in the last 12 hours so I decided it was better now to leave him out of the squad and allow us a different focus in the group."

Sampdoria are 10 points behind leaders Juventus ahead of the defending champions' home game against Verona later yesterday and level with Napoli in the third and last Champions League qualifying place.

But Ferrero said he was not getting carried away by his side's seven-point cushion over Milan and Inter.

"A seven-point lead over Inter and Milan is nothing," he added. — AFP

Paul Pogba and Serie A leading scorer Carlos Tevez both scored in the opening seven minutes as Juve extended their lead at the top of the standings with a 4-0 win.

Juve have 46 points from 19 games, with Roma on 41 after they were held 1-1 at Palermo on Saturday.

Napoli are a distant third with 33 points after beating Lazio 1-0 in Rome yesterday thanks to an 18th minute goal from Argentine international Gonzalo Higuain.

Fast-starting Juventus have made a habit of scoring in the opening minutes of games, with nine of their league-leading 42 coming inside the opening 15 minutes.

Pogba struck after three minutes with a precise low shot from 20 metres. Four minutes later Tevez scored, taking advantage of a dummy by Pogba that left him alone in the box.

Verona suffered a 6-1 drubbing by Juve on Thursday in the Coppa Italia round of 16 and they looked to be heading for even worse punishment yesterday.

However, Andrea Mandorlini's side held firm for the next 59 minutes before Roberto Pereyra grabbed his first goal for Juve.

Eight minutes later Tevez netted his second of the game after receiving a pass from Claudio Marchisio inside the box.

"We have to keep on winning," the 21-year-old Pogba told Sky Sports Italia. "We can't think about Roma."

Napoli moved above Lazio in the table after Higuain scored his seventh goal in four matches against Lazio.

The Argentine controlled a Dries Mertens through ball and unleashed a thunderous angled shot past substitute goalie Etrit Berisha.

"We have to continue like this," Higuain told Sky Sports Italia. "It is important to be back in third place."

Sampdoria, level on points with Napoli, scored two second half goals to earn their second away win of the season, 2-0 at Parma. Eder set up Gonzalo Bergessio's first goal of the season and Roberto Soriano added a second 16 minutes later.

Fiorentina are sixth after a 2-1 win at Chievo Verona — Khouma Babacar scoring a stoppage-time winner.

AC Milan lost their fourth home game of the season, going down 1-0 to Atalanta while Genoa battled back three times to earn a 3-3 draw with Sassuolo. — Reuters

Despite world glut, Iraq pumps crude at record level

Iraq is pumping crude oil at record pace even with global oversupply and price slump. — Reuters pic Iraq is pumping crude oil at record pace even with global oversupply and price slump. — Reuters pic BAGHDAD, Jan 19 — Iraq is pumping crude at a record pace and will continue to boost exports this year amid a global market glut that's pushed prices down, Oil Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said.

"The average for Iraqi crude output is four million barrels a day, which is a historical record," Abdul Mahdi said at a news conference after meeting his Turkish counterpart, Taner Yildiz, in Baghdad.

The figure includes output from the semi-autonomous Kurdish region in the north. In December, Iraq pumped 3.35 million barrels daily without the Kurdish region, according to the oil marketing organisation Somo.

Iraq plans to boost crude exports to 3.3 million barrels a day this year, including from the Kurdish area, Abdul Mahdi said. Iraq and Turkey agreed to boost Iraqi crude exports from the north via the Turkish port of Ceyhan to 375,000 barrels a day in the coming months, and to as much as 600,000 barrels a day by April, he said.

The Middle East nation, holder of the world's fifth-largest crude reserves, is rebuilding its energy industry after decades of wars and economic sanctions. The central government reached an accord last month with the Kurds over their oil exports through Turkey. Iraq exported 2.94 million barrels a day in December, the most since the 1980s, Oil Ministry spokesman Asim Jihad said Jan 2.

Oil prices fell almost 50 per cent last year, the most since the 2008 financial crisis, as crude supplies swelled amid the fastest pace of US production in more than three decades and the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries resisted calls to cut its own output. The United Arab Emirates and Qatar estimate the crude surplus at two million barrels a day.

Crude prices will rise gradually in the second half of 2015, although they won't return to 2014 levels, Abdul Mahdi said. — Bloomberg
