Police have stepped up security at St Capitaneo School in West Bengal state after the discovery of the five letters, threatening arson unless it was closed and its 13 nuns removed from the area.

"We are trying to trace the source of the letters. It's too early to comment on the authenticity of the letters but we are taking no chances," district police chief Celling Simik Lepcha told AFP.

The incident comes just over a week after an elderly nun was raped during a robbery at a separate convent school in the same state, sparking anger and protests.

Staff alerted police on Sunday to the letters which were found in the compound of the school's hostel, said West Bengal police Inspector General Anuj Sharma.

The letters, written in Hindi, have sparked fear among staff and the wider Christian community, said Father Dominic Gomes, spokesman for the Kolkata Archdiocese.

"The letters were tossed inside by unknown people and police are trying to identify them. They have assured us foolproof security at the school," he said.

"We are concerned over the safety and security of our institutions and people... there is fear in the minds of the community."

The incident comes in the wake of a series of attacks on churches or Catholic schools, and despite a pledge by Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure the safety of religious minorities.

The school near the border with Bhutan has around 1,700 students, mostly from poor tribal groups.

Police have come under fire for a lack of arrests over the attack on the nun, aged in her 70s, whose convent was also ransacked by the gang of robbers.

India is 80 per cent Hindu while Muslims make up 13.4 per cent of the 1.2 billion population. Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs and other religions account for the rest. — AFP

Ananda Krishnan's Tanjong Public Limited Company had helped 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) secure the financing it needed to settle its RM2 billion loan to banks in February, Parliament was told today in the latest revelation on the controversy.

According to Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah, Tanjong had arranged the funding with the help of private investors.

"1MDB's cash flow is not enough and it took a RM2 billion refinancing," he said, adding that refinancing is a normal procedure in the corporate sector.

Ahmad Husni noted there has been some misconception on the matter and clarified that the loan had not been refinanced by the banks.

"It is not the bank but from outside and was managed by Tanjong," he said referring to Ananda's company.

"Tanjong helped to obtain the RM2 billion fund with a principal repayment tenure of 15 months, and interest repayment (to be settled) within six months… there is no exchange risk and (this) was arranged by Tanjong," he added.

Ahmad Husni's claim today contradicts a written reply last week in Parliament, in which the Finance Ministry said that 1MDB's RM2 billion loan was settled with its fund from the Cayman Islands and not with Ananda's help.

Crashed Germanwings plane was ‘in perfect condition’, says Luftansa (VIDEO)

FRANKFURT, March 25 — Lufthansa chief Carsten Spohr said today the plane operated by its low-cost subsidiary Germanwings that crashed in the French Alps had been "in perfect condition".

"It is inexplicable," he said when asked if he had further information on the cause of the crash Tuesday that claimed the lives of 144 passengers and six crew.

"The plane was in perfect condition and the two pilots were experienced."

He said Lufthansa would begin offering flights from Duesseldorf and Barcelona to the southern French city of Marseille from tomorrow to allow the relatives of victims — most of them German and Spanish — to reach the crash region.

"Our priority right now is to help the families," he told reporters.

The company's chief financial officer Simone Menne said yesterday had been "without a doubt the toughest day (in the history) of Lufthansa".

"We don't ever, ever want to experience something like this again," she said.

The last fatal crash of a Lufthansa plane also involved an Airbus A320. It caught fire on landing near Warsaw in September 1993, killing two people and injuring 54.

The pair have starred together in numerous films including the Oscar-winning Silver Linings Playbook, Serena and American Hustle.

But while fans are desperate for Jennifer and Bradley to turn their friendship into a relationship, the actress insists it is purely platonic.

"We're not having sex," Jennifer said, according to the New York Post's Cindy Adams. "Sorry to disappoint you."

Jennifer and Bradley will next be seen in the upcoming Joy. And Bradley added to the publication that teaming up on so many projects has helped the pair perfect their on-screen chemistry.

"We do it as perfectly as we can, and working together you learn to anticipate," he said.

It seems Bradley and Jennifer have a mutual respect for each other. Speaking recently about working alongside Oscar-winning star Jennifer, Bradley said he was honoured to be able to team up with her on more than one occasion.

"I respect her so much as a professional, as an actor, and I think she's the best there is," he told US Weekly. "I just learn from her. You always want to work with people who are better than you."

Bradley is recently single after he and long-term girlfriend Suki Waterhouse, 23, ended their relationship after two years together.

According to reports, it was Suki's frustrations over Bradley stalling on the marriage front that led to their breakup.

"Her friends have been convinced Bradley was close to proposing, but for some reason he just never came through. Suki was adamant that if he couldn't bring himself to commit to her, with or without a baby, then she's obviously not the right girl for him," a source told British magazine Grazia.

"Suki loves Bradley, but her career has just taken off and she wants to have a few more years of working and to get married before starting a family." — Cover Media
