Italy orders man to buy feminist books for underage prostitute: reports

In addition to a two-year jail sentence, the unnamed man, 35, will be required to give the 15-year-old victim works including novels by Virginia Woolf, Anne Frank's diary and the poems of Emily Dickinson, as well as two feminist-themed films.

Judge Paola Di Nicola's ruling follows an investigation launched in 2013 into a Rome-based prostitution ring that pimped two girls aged 14 and 15 in the upmarket Parioli suburb of the Italian capital.

The teenagers were lured into the world of sex work with cash which they used to "buy new clothes and the latest mobile phones", reports said, citing investigators.

In the 2014 trial of the sex ring's mastermind, who was ultimately jailed for nine years, a judge said the girls were "children who got carried away with the debauchery, without restraint, so they could easily earn money".

A copy of the latest court ruling was not available today.

"But the decision suggests that the judge favoured a remedy that would help the young girl to understand the real 'damage' that she had suffered was damage to her dignity as a woman," wrote the Corriere della Sera daily.

Adriana Cavarero, whose "Notwithstanding Plato" was among the books that the judge ordered the accused to buy for the girl, told the newspaper it would be better if the judge had read the works to the convicted man.

"Adolescence is not the time for reflection, what he did was much worse: an adult who, knowingly, paid for sex with a minor," said Cavarero, a philosophy professor at Verona university. — AFP

Citroen debuts C3 WRC concept

Citroen debuts C3 WRC concept, September 24, 2016. — Today Online picCitroen debuts C3 WRC concept, September 24, 2016. — Today Online picSINGAPORE, Sept 24 — If you were a fan of the World Rally Championship (WRC) in the early noughties, a typical rally would be best described in the following manner: A bunch of manufacturers show up to race in a forest and a Citroen driver (usually WRC legend Sebastian Loeb) wins.

When the French manufacturer was last involved in WRC, it notched up race wins and titles with almost metronomic consistency, taking 96 WRC wins and eight World Rally Championships from 2003 to 2005 and 2008 to 2012.

Citroen has made motorsports success something of a habit since it first dipped its toes in the adrenaline-fuelled waters of motor racing in 1993, also winning Five Rally-Raid World Cups (from 1993 to 1997) and two World Touring Car Championships (WTCC) in 2014 and 2015.

The big news for fans of cars being driven at mind-boggling speeds on rough terrain is that Citroen will be returning to WRC next year and is putting serious mileage on its challenger that will be based on its C3. Driver Kris Meeke will spearhead the team's WRC effort and Citroen will unveil its C3 WRC concept car at the Paris Motor Show next week.

Citroen says the C3 WRC concept is very close to the car that will make its competitive debut at the Monte Carlo Rally in January next year and will produce about 380bhp. — Today Online

Rooney’s place in starting line-up not guaranteed, says Mourinho

The 31-year-old England skipper ― who on Thursday had said he didn't pay any attention to outside criticism of his form ― has failed to sparkle and was anonymous in the two Premier League defeats United suffered last week.

Mourinho, who himself has been subjected to criticism after United slumped to three successive defeats last week ― his worst run since 2002 ― would not, unlike his predecessor Louis van Gaal, guarantee Rooney a starting place.

"Wayne is the captain of the club, the manager and the players ― he is trusted by the players, he is trusted by myself and he represents the club in a fantastic way as a player and person and what is now socially," said Mourinho.

"Football is a different story.

"Football everyone is the same and if he has to go on the bench, he goes on the bench.

"If he has to stay at home, he stays at home, but that doesn't mean that you don't trust him or you have a problem (with him). Not at all.

"We have no problems. He is our captain but, of course, no privilege, he is like anyone else."

Mourinho, though, believes that Rooney's form or certainly morale has dipped since he was heavily slammed for his performance in the 2018 World Cup qualifier with Slovakia earlier this month which England won 1-0 with a late goal.

"Honestly, I think there was a Wayne before the Slovakia-England and a Wayne after the Slovakia-England," said Mourinho.

"And I am not blaming Sam (Allardyce, the England manager), not at all.

"I am blaming the people that after the England-Slovakia was, in my opinion, too strong with somebody that is a very important player in the history of English football, is the captain of England, is the record of goals, is almost the record of matches.

"I think it was too much but I still think, that a big boy like he is, he has to face it in a strong way."

Mourinho, who righted the ship slightly with a League Cup win over third-tier Northampton Town on Wednesday, said Rooney had faced down his critics before.

"That's what he tries every time. When he is on the pitch, he gives 100 per cent. Always, always," remarked Mourinho. ― AFP

They were matched with leggings and rucksacks and parachute-like dresses in high-tech fabrics, giving a sports flair to a part of the collection, mostly in black purple and green.

Other parts of the show included thinly pleated creations with knitted details or fluid silk dresses and skirts with optical patterns which included the brand's fret motif.

In a rare cameo, Naomi Campbell walked in a athleisure look with a layered blue and red wraparound skirt with matching cropped blouse with a zipper. She wore knee-high laced blue and red boots and carried a rucksack.

For a complete change of style for the evening, Versace woman changed into clear-cut, black designs, with short dresses and skin tights suits, embellished by crystal details giving off metallic reflections.

A red net dress with sequins stood out from the total black looks on show on the third day of Milan fashion week.

Wall Street falls as shares post gains on week

Facebook shares fell 1.6 per cent and were one of the biggest drags on the S&P 500. ― AFP picFacebook shares fell 1.6 per cent and were one of the biggest drags on the S&P 500. ― AFP picNEW YORK, Sept 24 ― Wall Street retreated yesterday as lower oil prices weighed on energy shares and Facebook and Apple declined, but major indexes still posted gains for the week.

Energy was the worst-performing major S&P sector, dropping 1.3 per cent. Oil prices tumbled 4 per cent on signs Saudi Arabia and Iran were making little progress on a bilateral agreement ahead of talks by crude exporters aimed at freezing production.

Facebook shares fell 1.6 per cent and were one of the biggest drags on the S&P 500. The Wall Street Journal reported that the social media company overestimated viewing times for video ads.

Even so, the S&P 500 recorded its best weekly performance in more than two months. Stocks were given a boost on Wednesday when the US Federal Reserve decided to keep rates steady, leaving intact the low-interest-rate environment that has helped fuel the bull market.

"I just think after a few strong days and a little weakness in energy that folks are taking some profit before the weekend," said Gary Bradshaw, portfolio manager with Hodges Capital Management in Dallas. "I just feel like the market is going to keep grinding higher."

The Dow Jones industrial average ended down 131.01 points, or 0.71 per cent, at 18,261.45, the S&P 500 lost 12.49 points, or 0.57 per cent, to 2,164.69 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 33.78 points, or 0.63 per cent, to 5,305.75.

For the year, the benchmark S&P 500 is up about 6 per cent. With the highly anticipated Fed decision now past, investors are turning toward the upcoming corporate earnings season and US presidential election, with the first debate on Monday.

"We have a lot of noise coming in with the end of the quarter and the debate," said Bucky Hellwig, senior vice president at BB&T Wealth Management in Birmingham, Alabama. "But given what the Fed has done, I think we have volatility with a bias to the upside."

Nine of 11 major S&P sectors ended lower. The tech sector fell about 1 per cent, with Apple shares  down 1.7 per cent on concerns about iPhone sales.

Twitter shares surged 21 per cent on reports that the microblogging company had initiated talks with several technology companies to explore selling itself.

Endo International shares jumped over 15 per cent after the drugmaker announced a new chief executive.

Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a 2.13-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.67-to-1 ratio favoured decliners.

The S&P 500 posted seven new 52-week highs and one new low; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 88 new highs and 13 new lows.

About 6.3 billion shares changed hands on US exchanges, below the 6.9 billion daily average for the past 20 trading days, according to Thomson Reuters data. ― Reuters
