Runnin'City offers 5- 10- and 15-kilometer running tours taking in predefined points of interest such as monuments, parks and museums. At each city sight, runners get a 30-second audio commentary of relevant historical and cultural information.

For the creators of Runnin'City — a new application combining running with urban tourism — the world's cities are effectively giant open-air museums which runners of all levels can head out to explore. The app offers an accompanying audio commentary and a GPS-guided tour to help visitors take in the sights without getting lost.

Ultra-trail runner Christophe Minodier and sporty tennis buff Olivier Lebleu found that they were reluctant to slip into their sneakers when travelling to unknown cities on business. With that in mind, they came up with the idea for "Smart Runs" or GPS-guided running tours taking visitors to major sights like monuments, streets, museums, parks and buildings, and automatically launching 30-second audio summaries at each stage.

Currently, the app offers "Smart Runs" in 70 cities worldwide, with a choice of three routes available in each. These include European destinations like Paris, Lyon, Berlin, London, Brussels, Luxembourg, Rotterdam, Geneva and Lisbon, US cities including New York, Washington, Boston, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Dallas and Houston, as well as locations in Canada (Montréal, Québec, Toronto, Vancouver) and Asia (Tokyo, Singapore, Seoul).

There's no need to be a jet-setter to make good use of the app. Anyone who's bored of their usual urban routes can break the routine with runs that take in local point of interest, pinpointed by GPS. The app also provides performance data measured by connected devices, such as time, distance, speed, incline and calories burned during a run.

The app's routes can also be enjoyed at a slower pace, as vacation or weekend walking tours with no performance objectives.

Available to download free of charge for iOS in English and in French, the app is expected to cover 150 cities by the end of 2016. The first "Smart Run" is free to download with further routes costing US$1.99 (RM8) each. The service can be used offline. — AFP-Relaxnews

The leading US orchestra said that tonight's concert will be live on Facebook, the first time it has streamed its opening gala which is a major New York social event and fund-raiser.

The concert will remain on Facebook, YouTube and the Philharmonic's website for 45 days.

The musicians will perform Antonin Dvorak's "New World Symphony", one of the best-known modern orchestral works which was originally commissioned by the New York Philharmonic.

The Czech composer wrote the 1893 piece as he explored the United States and took inspiration from its musical heritage including African American spirituals and American Indian traditional songs.

For the Philharmonic's upcoming season, its 175th, the orchestra has reached out to hundreds of musical groups across New York City including in schools and religious groups to ask them to interpret the "New World Symphony".

More than 70 groups from each of New York's five boroughs have so far joined the "New World Initiative", in which they will perform at sites across the diverse city.

"This project beautifully achieves one of my aspirations for the New York Philharmonic: to be not just an orchestra that happens to be in New York, but an orchestra that is New York's orchestra in a very meaningful way," music director Alan Gilbert, who is leading the Philharmonic for his last season, said in a statement.

Classical music organisations have been increasingly looking for ways to reach larger audiences, although some purists believe that real-time technology belongs out of the concert hall.

The Philharmonic's neighbour at Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Opera, has found a vital new revenue source over the past decade by broadcasting performances in high definition to cinemas around the world. — AFP

Sexual abuse lawsuit against Cosby takes backseat to criminal case

Attorney Gloria Allred said the criminal sexual assault case Cosby faces in suburban Philadelphia takes precedence over the lawsuit her client, Judy Huth, has brought against the 78-year-old entertainer in Los Angeles and could be undermined by the deposition in question.

Former donut shop employee Margie Shapiro, one of dozens of women who have come forward publicly in recent years to accuse Cosby of sexual wrongdoing, had been subpoenaed by Allred to give a deposition this coming Friday in Huth's civil case.

But Allred said she decided to withdraw the subpoena after prosecutors included Shapiro in a list of 13 women they have asked the Pennsylvania judge for permission to call as witnesses in Cosby's criminal trial next June.

Allred also asked the judge in Huth's civil suit to freeze any further discovery in the case, including a separate deposition of Shapiro sought by Cosby's lawyers, until the criminal case is resolved.

Cosby attorney Angela Agrusa opposed that move, and the judge set a hearing for November 4 on the issue.

Allowing Shapiro to be deposed in the civil case would give Cosby's criminal defence team a glimpse of what Shapiro might say under oath at his criminal trial and a chance to find inconsistencies they could later exploit under cross-examination.

"We think that they are attempting to use civil discovery to get around the limits on criminal discovery in the criminal case," Allred told reporters after yesterday's status conference on the lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Agrusa suggested Allred had something to hide and accused her of trying to "have it both ways".

"Ms Allred can't go around saying these women's stories are critical to her client's case and then just because they might be called in a criminal case now claim we can't depose them," Agrusa told Reuters.

"To take the position that ... their allegations can't be challenged denies Mr Cosby his fundamental right to ask questions of his accuser."

Cosby, who built a long career on family friendly comedy, including his long-running NBC sitcom The Cosby Show, has steadfastly denied ever assaulting anyone and insisted that all his sexual encounters were consensual.

He is charged in Pennsylvania with drugging and sexually assaulting a former Temple University employee, Andrea Constand, at his home in 2004.

Huth, now in her 50s, alleges in her lawsuit that Cosby plied her with alcohol and molested her in 1974 at the Playboy Mansion when she was aged 15. — Reuters

Opera browser unfurls free, unlimited VPN service (VIDEO)

Opera 40 introduces a free, unlimited VPN. — Handout via AFPOpera 40 introduces a free, unlimited VPN. — Handout via AFPNEW YORK, Sept 21 — Web browser Opera has launched a Virtual Private Network service built in to the latest version of its desktop app.

Once activated, the Opera VPN establishes a secure encrypted connection with one of five Opera servers around the world.

"We know that people are concerned about their privacy online and that the interest for VPN is increasing," said Krystian Kolondra, SVP of Opera browser for computers.

"However, two major obstacles are blocking people from using it: VPNs are too complicated to use, and they require a monthly subscription. Opera resolves both issues by introducing its free and easy-to-use service right into the browser."

Secure 256-bit AES encryption, run in conjunction with Opera subsidiary SurfEasy, is a no-log service, meaning that neither partners store information about a user's browsing history, the company says.

Users can choose between routing their browser traffic between Germany, the Netherlands, Singapore, Canada and the United States, or they can opt to let Opera choose a location for them.

Additional enhancements to video pop-outs, the built-in newsreader, a battery saving mode, and Chromecast support were also implemented in Opera 40.

Blunt, married to actor John Krasinski and known for embracing comedy in The Devil Wears Prada, The Five-Year Engagement and Into the Woods, told Reuters that she wanted the challenge of portraying something darker.

"It's just to do something else and something incredibly damaged and unsettling," the actress said on the train track-themed carpet at the film's London premiere eysterday.

In The Girl on the Train, based on Paula Hawkins' novel of the same name and out in theatres on October 7, Blunt plays Rachel Watson, a lonely woman devastated by divorce and battling alcohol addiction.

Infatuated by the seemingly perfect couple (Luke Evans and Haley Bennett) she sees from her daily commuter train that runs past their house, Rachel sees something shocking one day and becomes enraged.

Driven by intrigue, passion and suspense, Rachel has a chance to engage in the lives she has only watched from afar, but the lengths she goes to uncover the truth could lead her to a dangerous situation.

"It's a story full of broken people suffering with their own demons and addictions and betrayal and loss and love," Evans said.

Director Tate Taylor, best known for 2011's The Help, said he was drawn to the exploration of "humanity and the human condition at its worst", and wanted to portray an accurate representation of addiction.

"I felt like I had a duty to represent (addiction) properly for all those affected by it," he said. — Reuters
