More and more Chinese are travelling abroad

The official Xinhua news agency said that about 107 million Chinese ventured overseas in 2014 for leisure, citing a report by the China Tourism Academy, an institute under the China National Tourism Administration.

Xinhua quoted Dai Bin, the head of the academy, as saying the rising number of tourists going abroad was due to more relaxed visa policies in receiving countries.

The report predicted that the number of Chinese tourists heading overseas will increase more than 16 per cent next year, Xinhua said.

The academy's report also said that Chinese tourists spent US$164.8 billion (RM687.5 billion) while overseas last year, a total about four times higher than in 2008, Xinhua reported.

Chinese tourist numbers have dramatically increased over the past two decades as the economy has boomed to become the world's second largest.

The country's currency, the yuan, has also steadily strengthened over a period of years, making overseas holidays more affordable. ― AFP

Bundesliga: Wolfsburg cruise past Schalke without De Bruyne

The 24-year-old was left out of yesterday's squad with Wolfsburg poised to agree to a reported Bundesliga record fee of £54 million (RM346.752 million) before Germany's transfer window closes at 1800 (1600 GMT) on Monday.

In De Bruyne's absence, Dutch striker Bas Dost gave Wolfsburg an early lead by drilling home a 17th-minute cross before Swiss left-back Ricardo Rodriguez converted a penalty just before the hour mark.

Centre half Timm Klose then netted Wolfsburg's third goal with 61 minutes gone as his side bounced back with a convincing win compared to last weekend's uninspired 1-1 draw at Cologne.

Wolves' director of sport Klaus Allofs expects the on-going De Bruyne transfer saga to be resolved over the weekend.

"It's all about a few small details. It could be that we reach an agreement today or tomorrow," Allofs told Sky before kick-off.

The De Bruyne deal is set to smash the Bundesliga transfer record after Liverpool paid Hoffenheim 41 million euros for Brazil striker Roberto Firmino in July.

Reports suggest Wolfsburg could pocket up to 80 million euros, with an extra six million euros in bonuses, for De Bruyne if the attacking midfielder helps City win this season's Premier League title.

Schalke's Germany midfielder Julian Draxler, who played the first 73 minutes yesterday, could be his possible replacement at Wolfsburg, but Allofs added: "I could give you ten to 15 possible names".

Croatia midfielder Ivan Perisic, who was also left out of the Wolfsburg squad, is poised to join Inter Milan for 20 million euros before the transfer window closes.

Both De Bruyne and Perisic were in the stadium to watch their team win to top the table by a point from Borussia Dortmund and third-placed defending champions Bayern Munich.

"We need players who identify themselves 100 per cent with the club," explained Allofs when asked why the pair were left out. — AFP

Traders fear bloodshed at Bersih 4

An elderly man, who sells tissue in front of Dataran Merdeka, said the capital city was "too eerie" this morning despite the blaring noise of the Merdeka Day celebration rehearsals.

"There will be trouble, something will definitely happen," the man, who only wanted to be known as Khaled, told Malay Mail Online. "There is going to be bloodshed."

There were also talks of trouble among a nasi lemak vendor and customers outside the Masjid Jamek LRT Station, with the trader saying that the police had chased away early this morning a few people who were waving a Malaysian flag and dressed in yellow, the official colour of rally organisers Bersih 2.0.

"Imagine later today, surely it will be worse," the nasi lemak vendor, who declined to be named, told Malay Mail Online.

Just as she completed her sentence, two police cars sped through, heading towards Jalan Raja Laut with blaring sirens.

The government has also instructed the media to register later this morning to get special vests for coverage of the Bersih 4 rally. The Home Ministry said that 4,000 police officers will be deployed for the demonstration.

Security guard Muhammad Akmal, 70, said that judging by how the authorities acted at the last Bersih rally in 2012 that was marred by a police crackdown, there might be a bigger tussle between the police and demonstrators at Bersih 4 later.

"This time will surely be more bloody. You can expect a lot more clashes from both sides," Akmal told Malay Mail Online.

"Since a lot of orders like banning yellow shirts were given this week, the people are fuming. They will take to the streets in numbers and the police will not like it," he said, adding that he has attended all previous Bersih rallies by the polls reform group.

The Home Ministry banned yesterday yellow Bersih 4 shirts and printed materials on the mass rallies that is scheduled this afternoon the city centre, Kota Kinabalu in Sabah and Kuching in Sarawak, even as Bersih 2.0 has already sold thousands of Bersih 4 tees.

Akmal told Malay Mail Online that the building where he works at here will be locked down during the Bersih 4 rally later and that his superiors have prohibited him from giving shelter to anyone.

"My boss has already warned us. I can't go out, even if people come begging for help," said the security guard.

A 24-hour restaurant owner here contemplated cutting short his operating hours should things get out of hand after the rally kicks off at 2pm.

"I am worried. If there is a riot, we will close. We cannot afford to lose or damage our rice bowl because of one day," he said, refusing to be named.

Retiree William Leong said he came down from Penang for the overnight Bersih 4 rally here, despite his family's objections.

"I do not want to leave this earthly world without doing anything for my country. My family told me not to come, it would be too dangerous but I don't care," Leong, who used to work at the Penang Port, told Malay Mail Online.

"I am here because I love my country. Even if it is pointless rallying here in KL, I together with the people just want to show dissatisfied we are with the way things are being run," he added.

The retiree also said he would wear his yellow T-shirt despite the government ban on Bersih 4 shirts.

"If they arrest me, I won't resist," he said.

Other than calling for fair elections, the 34-hour Bersih 4 rally also demands for institutional reforms and the resignation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak over his handling of controversial state fund, 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

In flashpoint refugee town, Germany reinstates ban on demos

Heidenau, a town of around 16,000 inhabitants near Dresden, has become the focus of Germany's struggle to absorb a vast wave of asylum seekers that is expected to reach a record 800,000 this year.

"Saxony sought the help of federal police and this support will be provided," interior ministry spokesman Johannes Dimroth said, without saying how many officers would be deployed.

Last weekend, police and far right demonstrators clashed outside a refugee centre in Heidenau. On a visit to the town this week Chancellor Angela Merkel was booed by protesters.

The incidents prompted local authorities to outlaw all outdoor public gatherings from yesterday afternoon until Monday morning, claiming they could not ensure public safety.

An administrative court in Dresden yesterday declared the ban "clearly illegal", saying police forces from around the country could be sent as backup.

"In addition, the police have the resources, including water cannon, to prevent any disproportionate damage," the court said.

But a few hours later Saxony's administrative court of appeal reinstated the prohibition, banning all gatherings over the weekend, including those in support of refugees.

Chancellor Angela Merkel herself pledged to do "everything possible to provide support to the Saxony police" at a news conference with Danish Prime Minister Lars Rasmussen.

Merkel has condemned the anti-migrant protests as "vile" and travelled to Heidenau on Wednesday in a show of support for refugees and volunteers at the shelter.

But as she arrived at the centre, some 200 people jeered and booed her, shouting far-right slogans, including "Traitor, traitor!" and "We are the mob".

As the courts were weighing legal arguments for and against the ban yesterday, dozens of pro-refugee activists travelled to Heidenau to hold a 'welcome party' for the newcomers.

"Refugees are welcome here!" they shouted, many of them wearing t-shirts bearing the slogan "No one is illegal".

They also handed out clothes and other supplies to the 250 refugees staying at the shelter.

An anti-racism demonstration was also planned Saturday afternoon in Dresden, stronghold of the anti-Islam PEGIDA movement, whose demonstrations drew up to 25,000 at the start of the year.

Kneeling before the mob

The initial decision to ban public gatherings had been sharply criticised by politicians and Germany's police union GdP, whose deputy chief Joerg Radek described it as "kneeling before the mob in Heidenau".

It is "a slap in the face" for all who "stand against the stupid cheap propaganda of the far right," said Radek.

Opposition Greens party leader Cem Ozdemir told public broadcaster ARD that the decision effectively "overwrites democracy for four days because the Saxony state is overwhelmed".

The sudden surge in people seeking refugee in Europe's biggest economy has exposed a wave of anti-migrant sentiment, particularly in the eastern part of the country which lags behind the west in terms of jobs and opportunities some 25 years after reunification.

A spate of arson attacks have targeted refugee shelters in recent weeks.

Yesterday, local police reported an apparent arson attempt against an asylum-seekers' shelter in the northwestern state of Lower Saxony, where a molotov cocktail was thrown into a former school building now serving as a refugee home.

A woman and her three children living at the shelter in Salzhemmendorf escaped without injury as fire fighters were able to put out the flames quickly, police said.

A 24-year-old man with a history of violence, a 30-year-old man with previous theft convictions and a 23-year-old woman were arrested over the incident.

Regional interior minister Stefan Weil told NDR radio that the three had confessed to the attack. — AFP

Emerging-market stocks rise as currencies end week of volatility with advance

Posted: 28 Aug 2015 05:52 PM PDT

Investors look at computer screens showing stock information at a brokerage in Shanghai, China. — File picInvestors look at computer screens showing stock information at a brokerage in Shanghai, China. — File picLONDON, Aug 29 ― Emerging-market assets rose yesterday as currencies averted a 10th weekly drop and stocks completed the biggest two-day rally since 2013, rebounding from a selloff fueled by concern over higher interest rates in the US and a slowdown in China.

The ruble extended its first weekly advance in 10 as the currency of the world's biggest energy exporter climbed with crude oil, while the South African rand and Brazilian real fell in a rout exacerbated by China's unexpected depreciation of the yuan on August 11. A 7.9 per cent five-day loss in the Shanghai Composite Index was offset by gains in stock benchmarks from Mexico to Korea.

Financial markets have been convulsed by concerns over weaker Chinese growth, with as much as US$8 trillion erased from the value of global equities since the move to weaken the country's currency. Some investors speculate that the Fed won't raise rates in September because of market developments.

"Volatility will stay high near-term, at least until the Fed meeting," said Hertta Alava, who helps oversee the equivalent of about US$395 million (RM1.6 billion) as the head of emerging markets at FIM Asset Management Ltd in Helsinki. "Weakness in EM currencies seems to continue and those countries which have a large current account deficit are most vulnerable."

Stocks rebound

Emerging-market equities posted the first weekly advance in more than a month as investors searched for bargains amid speculation funds linked to the government in Beijing are buying equities. Policy makers want to stabilise shares before President Xi Jingping appears at a military parade next week to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the World War II victory over Japan, people familiar with the matter said.

A 23 per cent decline in emerging-market stocks from an April peak pushed valuations to an 18-month low before a rebound this week. Still, most investors are betting on gains fizzling out, with attention focused on the Fed. The Chinese rally will be short-lived because state intervention is too costly to continue and valuations are still not justified given the slowing economy, according to Bank of America Corp.

"China has its problems, lots of them, but they are by now priced into the market and they are well known to the investors," Leopold Quell, a co-fund manager at Raiffeisen Capital Management in Vienna, said by e-mail. Stocks are "at attractive levels" after the selloff, he said.

Slowing growth

The MSCI Emerging Markets Index rose 0.9 per cent to 820.25 in New York yesterday, widening its gain this week to 1 per cent for the first five-day increase since July 17. Developing-nation stocks tumbled on Monday before gaining 4.2 per cent in the last two trading days. Even so, the stocks benchmark is poised for the biggest monthly loss since May 2012.

The Shanghai Composite climbed on the last trading session of the week, paring its loss and taking its two-day increase to more than 10 per cent. The latest speculation about market intervention by China follows a halt to an unprecedented government effort to prop up equity prices that had prompted a debate among officials over the merits of such a programme.

The MSCI developing-nations measure is still down 6.6 per cent since the yuan devaluation, with the price-to-earnings ratio for the next 12 months at 10.7 times, a 30 per cent discount to the MSCI World Index of advanced-nation stocks.

Emerging-market currencies rose less than 0.1 per cent, avoiding a 10th weekly drop that would have been the longest streak since the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Malaysia's ringgit, among the worst-hit currencies in the meltdown 18 years ago, fell 0.7 per cent for a 10th weekly decline.

The yuan climbed the most since March after the central bank boosted the currency's reference rate in the biggest increase in five months. Currencies of oil-producing nations rebounded as crude capped the biggest two-day gain since 2009, sustaining a rebound above US$40 a barrel amid signs of a strengthening economy in the US, the world's biggest crude- consuming country. ― Bloomberg

Spaniards and tourists from around the world, some wearing goggles to protect their eyes from the flying fruit, crammed the narrow streets to smear each other with seven truckloads of squashed tomatoes.

"It's crazy, like a massive orgy of tomatoes and people," said Evaran James, a 30-year-old from Australia.

Houses and shops draped covers over their facades to protect them from the red juice and pulp.

The 'Tomatina' fight originates from a spontaneous bust-up amongst villagers in 1945. The event, banned for a time during the 1950s at the height of General Francisco Franco's dictatorship, has drawn a huge international following in recent years. — Reuters

The hazy situation is likely to go on until the end of the southwest monsoon season, Meteorological Department spokesman Dr Hisham Mohd Anip said as quoted by The Star.

Hisham added that coastal states from Kedah down to Johor could be the hardest hit.

Sarawak may see its haze situation improve over the next few days as the winds were set to change direction, he said.

Winds from Indonesia were carrying the smoke from Kalimantan and Sumatra to Malaysia and Singapore at the moment.

The Meteorological Department said there could be more rain here next month when the winds change during the inter-monsoon period, which would help clear the haze.

However, Hisham warned that the Indonesian weather could also get drier, which would result in increased hot spots and more smoke being blown here unless the fires were put out before then.

The chances of hot and dry weather in Indonesia is expected to increase with the global El Nino phenomenon.

According to the Air Pollutant Index (API), Seri Manjung in Perak recorded the unhealthiest air in the country yesterday, which spiked to 103 at 11am before declining to 100 at 3pm.

An API reading of between 0 and 50 is good, 51 to 100 is moderate, 101 to 200 is unhealthy, 201 to 300 is very unhealthy, while 301 and above is hazardous.

Cheating Josh Duggar enters rehab

"Yesterday Josh checked himself into a long-term treatment center. For him it will be a long journey toward wholeness and recovery. We pray that in this he comes to complete repentance and sincere change," his parents, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, said in a statement on the Duggar Family website.

Duggar, 27, was one of the stars of TLC reality show "19 Kids and Counting" about the lives of the deeply Conservative Duggar family who live in Arkansas.

Last week he admitted he had cheated on his wife of six years, and had become addicted to pornography, describing himself as "the biggest hypocrite ever."

His admission followed reports that his name was among data dumped by hackers that detailed millions of members of the Ashley Madison website.

It was another second major blow to the image of the Duggar family. Discovery Communications-owned network TLC last month canceled "19 Kids," after disclosures in May that Josh Duggar had sexually abused four of his sisters when he was a teenager, one of whom was under 10 years old at the time.

Duggar resigned from his job at Christian lobbying group Family Research Council.

In yesterday's statement, Duggar's parents said they were "deeply grieved" by the actions of their eldest son.

"His wrong choices have deeply hurt his precious wife and children and have negatively affected so many others. He has also brought great insult to the values and faith we hold dear," they said.

Growing up — Syamim Hariri

Posted: 26 Aug 2015 06:32 PM PDT

Aug 27 — During my primary and secondary years, I was fortunate enough to have had a few good friends who were very close with me.

Now these were good friends, but the icing on the cake was that I had also had a few best friends and not just one as many others have. To be exact, I had two Malays, one Chinese and also one Indian as my best friends.

For the record, my close friends were made up entirely of Chinese and Indians.

The main language to communicate with my non-Malay friends have always been English and this included during primary, secondary, college and right up till now. Seldom did I use Malay to communicate with them. I only used Malay with my Malay friends. I was in fact more comfortable with English and this might be due to the fact that I had spent a portion of my childhood abroad.

I consider myself blessed in so many ways. Not only did I have a happy upbringing and a great family, outside of the home I had had so many friends who I can confide in. I grew up with no major problems and I had the best of time.

Around 2013, one of my friend, who was an Indian, had called up asking to catch up. We decided on a place and I asked him to bring along another friend who was a Chinese. We later met at the place and had our dinner together. There were some light talk during dinner with the usual catching up and how's it going as old friends do when they meet.

After finishing our sumptuous dinner of roti canai garing and fish curry, my Chinese friend had cracked a joke saying what else do the Chinese want? This was in clear reference to a question posed by our Prime Minister after the general election where it seemed like all the Chinese had abandoned him and his cause siding with the opposition. All of us at the table had laughed as that was really a stupid statement or question.

Then the conversation had taken a serious turn as my Indian friend after he stopped laughing asked me, how I viewed the non-Malays. He said that he could feel the earth rumbling beneath him and that there were some tensions amongst the races and he could not sensed this during the time we grew up.

My Chinese friend, who lauds himself and is so proud of the fact that he could speak perfect Malay mentions that, all jokes aside, he feels that the Malays, compared to when we were growing up and now, were less friendly and sometimes eyed him with suspicion.

I chimed in and mentioned that these two guys who were at the table with me were whom I viewed as brothers. I further added that despite what is being said by the politicians, papers that were mouthpiece for political parties and any individuals did not in any way reflect my views and how I view the non-Malays.

I further on mentioned that the Malays who had beef with the non-Malays hadn't grown up and had the privilege of knowing whom I had known. It goes without saying that the non-Malays who had had beef with the Malays, hadn't grown up in my friends' shoes and known the great guy that is me.

And why is there beef all around us? It is because we failed to assimilate. Everything is based on race. Everything in this country is based on race and it is ripping the thread and seams that are holding this nation together.

In hindsight, I feel that I was fortunate that my non-Malay friends had chosen to go to a Sekolah Kebangsaan and a Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan. If they had chosen to go elsewhere, I wouldn't have met them and I wouldn't be the guy that I am today.

I do not want to delve into the types of school in Malaysia. There are so many reasons why parents enroll their child into any one type of school and write up is not about addressing those.

However I would like to suggest that we allow our schools to become like our colleges and universities. Where there would be a home class at the very beginning and then students are free to roam. I sincerely wish that more would get my opportunity at witnessed the things I saw and have camaraderie like I had climate would not allow that.

It makes me feel even luckier that I managed to get what I got as I truly believe that only a select few are lucky enough to get what I got.

The situation is where children are separated and groomed without knowing one another. How do we expect to prosper as a nation when majority that are brought up in the system grow up without knowing one another. It is like a factory that is producing one product but the designing team is not on talking terms with the components team.

Empathy is best developed during childhood. Malaysia has the entire ingredient to produce world talent but something is holding us back. Knowledge isn't learnt only in school. "Soft knowledge" is something that should be apparent in our people but we have failed.

Depending on which race you ask, you will get differing answers and views. So which is right? It doesn't matter. What matters is the future and we know the problem so how should we move about for the future? I think the time is nigh that the different races of Malaysia buck up and come together as one.

Forget the misunderstandings, forget what this race has got and what that race has not and close ranks. We can be different but we need to understand each other better and definitely close ranks. Because at the end of the day, if things stay status quo, this nation that we all call home, despite some of our grandparents arriving on boats, tongkangs or whatnots, will falter.

If it falters, where are we to go?

China stalls spur bargain buying spree

The 10th daily drop in the 12 sessions since China's surprise currency move on August 11 pushed valuations for developing-nation shares to levels that preceded Russia's invasion of Crimea in March 2014 and the slide in oil prices. The lure of cheaper stocks that propped up prices on Tuesday and early yesterday proved short-lived as investors speculated it's too early to start buying.

The MSCI Emerging Markets Index dropped 0.4 per cent to 785.33 at 1.18pm in New York, after climbing 2.2 per cent on Tuesday and rising as much as 0.9 per cent earlier yesterday. Stocks fell and currencies slumped to a record as investors interpreted the decision by the People's Bank of China as a signal the world's second-largest economy may slow down, undermining demand for commodities from countries including Brazil, Russia and South Africa.

"China has a stock market bubble, an economy that is slowing, they have to manage all this, and it's not going to be a smooth sailing," said Howard Ward, chief investment officer of growth equities at Mario Gabelli's Gamco Investors Inc., which oversees US$45.4 billion (RM191.28 billion) in Rye, New York. "China isn't growing at 7 per cent, maybe it's growing at 3 per cent, and maybe it's not growing at all — nobody knows, and this creates a risk as the broader emerging markets are tight to China."

The gauge of emerging-market equities is valued at 10.3 times the projected earnings of its members, near the lowest valuation since March 11, 2014, and below its five-year average.

US$5 trillion

Chinese equities extended losses since their June 12 peak to US$5 trillion as the Shanghai Composite Index recorded the steepest five-day drop since 1996. Policy makers cut rates for a fifth time since November and lowered the amount of cash banks must set aside. That spurred a rally of as much as 4.3 per cent before gains fizzled out in the last hour.

An unprecedented government intervention to support the equity market was halted this week as policy makers debated its merits, according to people familiar with the situation. A gauge of Chinese stocks traded in Hong Kong slumped for a ninth day to the lowest level since March 2014.

South Korea's Kospi index capped the biggest two-day increase since June 2013 as tensions with North Korea eased.

In New York, the Standard & Poor's 500 Index climbed 1.7 per cent, amid its steepest losing streak in four years. New York Fed Bank President William Dudley said today that the case for raising interest rates in September is less compelling because of international financial and market developments.

Budget advice

Saudi Arabia's Tadawul All Share Index retreated after this year's biggest gain on Tuesday. The country is seeking advice on how to cut billions of dollars from next year's budget because of the slump in crude prices, according to two people familiar with the matter. Dubai's DFM General Index slid for a fourth time in five days.

Russia's Micex Index gained 0.2 per cent and the ruble weakened for the ninth time in 10 days. Israel's shekel slid for a second day. The Bank of Israel may cut its benchmark interest rate below zero if circumstances warrant, Governor Karnit Flug said Tuesday.

The ringgit depreciated for a fifth time in six days as concern about the finances of a state investment firm at the heart of a political scandal worsened the outlook for Malaysia's economy. A gauge of 20 developing-nation currencies fell 0.5 per cent, dropping for the ninth time in 10 days. — Bloomberg

Van Gaal hails Manchester Utd hattrick hero Rooney

United will go into the hat in today's group-stage draw after their victory in Bruges yesterday completed a 7-1 aggregate win in the competition's play-off round.

Rooney had previously gone 10 club games without scoring, prompting suggestions he was unsuited to the role of lone striker in Van Gaal's single-striker system, but the Dutchman said he never doubted that the England captain would rediscover the path to goal.

"I have given him always the confidence that a player needs, but I think Wayne has a very strong mentality and with his level he always shall come back," Van Gaal said.

"And he proved that this evening (Wednesday). But still it's a long way for him and also for Manchester United it's not so easy. Of course I'm very happy for him."

All three of Rooney's goals were pleasing on the eye, as he applied assured one-touch finishes to passes from Memphis Depay, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata.

Herrera stroked in United's fourth goal in the 63rd minute at Jan Breydel Stadium, having been moved forward into a number 10 role following the half-time introduction of Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Herrera had struggled in the game's early stages, misplacing passes and earning a booking for an untidy foul on Victor Vazquez, and Van Gaal admitted afterwards that he had contemplated taking him off.

"He started not so good. He had a lot of ball losses and also a yellow card, so at that moment I wanted to change him, but then I saw he was coming back," said Van Gaal, who also saw substitute Javier Hernandez miss a late penalty.

"And after that moment he plays a good match on the 'double six' position, but later on (at) 10 he was better. So I'm very pleased also for him."

Van Gaal won the Champions League with an exciting young Ajax team in 1995 and took Bayern Munich to the final in 2010, but he has not led a team in the competition since 2011.

'They have everything'

Asked how the tournament had changed during his absence, he replied: "I cannot judge because (for) three years I was not a participant.

"Of course I've seen the matches on television. I think it is the highest podium, and it was also 10 years ago and 20 years ago.

"It is the highest podium that you can show yourself or your team and it's fantastic to be a participant."

The 2014-15 season was the first time United had not graced the Champions League in 19 years, the legacy of a disastrous seventh-place finish under Van Gaal's hapless predecessor David Moyes.

Holders Barcelona, Bayern, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain are among the teams who could be drawn to face United, but Van Gaal said that he would not be watching the draw.

"I don't know the teams who are participating, but I think I cannot have any influence on the draw," he said.

"There was also a lady who asked me what am I going to do tomorrow (Thursday) during the draw. I said I shall watch the second team against Ajax because that's more important for me.

"I cannot influence the draw, so it's better to hear afterwards."

Club Brugge coach Michel Preud'homme had said before the game that his side required a "miracle" to qualify and he felt that the outcome of the tie was logical.

"This team has everything — technical quality, physical quality in power and endurance, and of course they have the mentality," said the former Belgium goalkeeper, who was missing several key players through injury and suspension.

"It's a top team and they are top players. They have everything. We are there to learn something and I hope we can learn a lot from these two confrontations." — AFP

So far, the machine proves that viruses can be transferred during vomiting, particularly norovirus.

The machine enables researchers to control the volume, viscosity and pressure of simulated vomiting.

"Epidemiological evidence has pointed to virus aerosolization during vomiting as a likely route for spreading norovirus, and our work here confirms that it's not only possible but probable," says study co-author Lee-Ann Jaykus of North Carolina State University, director of the USDA-NIFA Food Virology Collaborative initiative (NoroCORE).

The paper about the machine was published in the journal PLOS One.  — AFP-Relaxnews

The new ride has been in development for more than 10 years and has finally opened to the public.

Warrie Price is president and founder of the Battery Conservancy, which is behind the project.

"We want that seaglass feeling. We want it in this chamber nautilus, which is a cephalopod not a fish."

One of the facets that separates this carousel from others is that its motors lie under the floor ― so riders can see across the whole shell and sit within the figures, rather than on top of them.

Van Gaal: United could have signed Pedro, not selling De Gea

He also defended executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who was widely reported to have flown to Barcelona to tie up the deal and said goalkeeper David De Gea would be staying.

Van Gaal stressed that United were still an attractive option for any player they wanted to bring to the club.

"I think when Manchester United wants a player he shall come, besides when a club is not selling. It is the same with us. We are not selling De Gea."

He blamed the media for exaggerating his interest in Pedro.

"When you ask me if Pedro is fitting in the profile, I cannot lie, then I said yes, but I don't say I am interested in the player, that's the difference," the Dutchman told a news conference.

"I think if we want Pedro it was not any problem because there was a (release) clause in his contract. It was the easiest transfer," he added.

"What is written in the newspapers is not true, you cannot know it. Only the players know it and the clubs know it.

"I have the idea you want to separate Ed Woodward from me. Never. Never. Every day I'm updated by him and I trust him."

The Dutchman would not comment on speculation linking United with Southampton's Senegal forward Sadio Mane, saying that with a squad of 28 players he was not under any pressure to make new signings.

Memphis Depay, recruited before the start of the season, was impressive as United beat Bruges 3-1 in the first leg of their Champions League qualifying round match on Tuesday, giving them a third win out of three.

They host Newcastle United on Saturday, when Van Gaal said De Gea would again not feature.

He has not played this season after the manager said the stopper was not focused because of transfer speculation linking him to Real Madrid in his native Spain. ― Reuters

‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ sequel to hit theatres on Valentine’s Day 2017

James. According to Deadline, the studio has chosen well-known TV director James Foley for the job.

The "Fifty Shades of Grey" saga has been a major headache for Universal since the announcement of the books' adaptation to the big screen in 2012. After significant delays in the launch of the first chapter due to casting changes, the second chapter is proving just as difficult to handle. It seems that the studio's problems may be a thing of the past however. Universal has finally scheduled the filming of "Fifty Shades Darker" for the beginning of 2016 with James Foley at the helm.

Particularly active on the small screen, Foley has an impressive list of television shows under his belt: he directed several episodes of "Twin Peaks," "Hannibal," "Wayward Pines" and "House of Cards." His last feature-length production goes back to 2007 with "Perfect Stranger," a thriller starring Halle Berry and Bruce Willis.

Moving on from earlier tension

The director of "Who's That Girl" has come to the project just in time to resurrect the "Fifty Shades of Grey" franchise, which seemed to have been at a stand-still the last couple of months.  Despite the success of the first opus, which grossed US$570 million (RM2.38 billion) at the global box-office, several artistic disputes prevented the second chapter from staying on schedule and hitting theatres in early 2016.

Because of the tensions with the trilogy's author E. L. James, producer Sam Taylor-Johnson and scriptwriter Kelly Marcel decided to back out of the following two films. The English novelist wants to have the last word on the adaptation. So much so in fact, that she insisted her husband, Niall Leonard, be part of the writing team.

Despite rumours circulating around a pay-raise demand on the part of actors Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, both will star in "Fifty Shades Darker," scheduled for release February 10, 2017. The second episode will focus on the reunion between lovers Anastasia Steele and millionaire Christian Grey. The third and final episode, "Fifty Shades Freed," is expected to hit theatres in February 2018.  — AFP-Relaxnews

Autopsy reveals black teen killed by St Louis police shot in back

News of the preliminary results of an autopsy escalated tensions that had flared after Wednesday's killing of Mansur Ball-Bey, as protesters and family of the slain 18-year-old questioned police accounts that he pointed a gun at officers.

In angry clashes Wednesday night, officers in riot gear fired tear gas and more protests followed on Thursday night.

Fresh protests are planned for last night in the area of the shooting, according to social media posts by activists.

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said additional officers would be available for the weekend in anticipation of further protests. He said he met with Gov. Jay Nixon and the Missouri Highway Patrol Friday to arrange for state assistance if needed.

Late Friday, St. Louis' elected prosecutor, Circuit Attorney Jennifer M. Joyce, said her office would begin investigating now, rather than waiting until police turn over the results of their own investigation.

She assured St. Louisans at a news conference that her investigation would be independent from the one St. Louis police are conducting.

"I don't work for the police chief," said Joyce. "I don't work for the mayor. I am elected separately. When police have committed a crime, I hold them accountable."

Less than two weeks ago the St. Louis area was flooded with protesters from across the country marking the anniversary of the August 9, 2014, killing of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown by a white police officer in nearby Ferguson, Missouri.

Brown's death was one of a series of police killings of unarmed black men and teens across the United States that sparked a newly energized civil rights movement under the banner "Black Lives Matter".

Autopsy results show a bullet struck Ball-Bey in the upper right of his back, hitting his heart and an artery next to it, said St. Louis Chief Medical Examiner Michael Graham.

The autopsy findings appear to contradict the version of the shooting given by police, who said two officers shot at Ball-Bey when he pointed a gun at them as he fled a home where police were serving a search warrant. Police said Ball-Bey dropped his weapon and continued running after he was shot.

The position and track of the bullet, which did not exit Ball-Bey's body, show that he was not turned toward officers when he was shot, Graham said. The shot would have killed him nearly instantly, making it difficult if not impossible for him to keep running, though if he was running there would have been some forward momentum, Graham said.

Graham said it was impossible to tell from the autopsy whether Ball-Bey was slightly turned, or was twisting his torso toward officers when he was shot.

"There are so many variables," said Graham. "But he certainly wasn't facing, his chest wasn't facing the officers."

The results of the autopsy are preliminary and evidence was still being gathered, Dotson said, but he said one witness had corroborated officer accounts that Ball-Bey had a gun.

"The complete truth takes time to put together," he told a press conference. "We must let the physical evidence lead us to our conclusions."

Police said they had recovered a gun, which they determined was stolen, though they do not know if Ball-Bey's finger prints were on it, Dotson said.

Jermaine Wooten, an attorney representing Ball-Bey's family, told CNN yesterday no witnesses had seen the teenager with a gun.

Wooten said Ball-Bey did not live in the community and was visiting relatives but not at the house where police were serving the warrant, he said.

"He never had a gun. He did not point back toward the officers," Wooten told CNN. He said Ball-Bey could not have run more than a few feet after being shot, which contradicts police statements.

A report containing evidence gathered in Ball-Bey's shooting will be turned over to the city attorney and the US Attorney in St. Louis for review, police officials said.

Antonio French, a St. Louis Alderman and prominent voice in the black community, called for the circuit attorney of St. Louis to conduct a simultaneous investigation of the shooting. ― Reuters

‘Future Man,’ the new show from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg

Their latest, a show called "Future Man," is destined for the streaming site Hulu.

The science fiction comedy will focus on a janitor by day/world-ranked gamer by night who is tasked with preventing the extinction of humans after mysterious visitors from the future proclaim him the key to defeating the imminent super-race invasion.

In a break from custom, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will not be responsible for writing this crazy story. The script will be signed by Kyle Hunter and Ariel Schaffir, frequent collaborators of Rogen and Goldberg's, including on "The Night Before," a Christmas comedy scheduled for the holiday season that will star Rogen alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Two more from the school of Apatow

At only 33 years old, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg already have an impressive list of credits to their names. It all started in the late nineties thanks to Rogen, who had been noticed by Judd Apatow. His experience as a stand-up comedian and his improve talent landed him roles in two of the director's shows, "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared," both of which have attained cult status since.

After making it big with "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and, to a higher degree, with "Knocked Up," both movies directed by Apatow, Rogen could now pitch his own ideas to Hollywood. With his childhood friend Goldberg, he then proceeded to write a series of outrageously hilarious comedies, including "Superbad," "Pineapple Express" and "This is the End."

In 2014, the duo even found themselves at the centre of a diplomatic crisis with North Korea because of their film "The Interview." Following the infamous Sony hacks and the threats made in relation to the comedy about the assassination of Kim Jong-Un, the film almost never came out.

A bright future

All of that trouble apparently had no effect on their careers though, as Rogen and Goldberg are in fact flush with projects for both movies and television.

In 2016, they will produce "Console Wars," a film about the intense rivalry between Sega and Nintendo in the 90s, and the animated comedy "Sausage Party." Paul Rudd, Kristen Wiig, Salma Hayek, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera and Edward Norton will all lend their voices.

On the television side, "Future Man" isn't their only project either. For AMC they are also developing "Preacher," an adaptation of a violent and irreverent comic book that will star Dominic Cooper.  AFP-Relaxnews
